Film and Lit, 1/18/07, period 1

There was a large pot of coffee in one corner of the room. There were cups, making it look at least like it was for everyone, but Daisy was definitely hovering over this part of the room, and seemed to be drinking rather a lot of the coffee herself.

"Hey, everyone. We're going to start right in, today, with a film that stars one of the few modern actors who's worth anything." She started passing out information sheets. "This is Edge Sprinter, based on a novel called Do Robots Dream of Fake Goats. Those are information sheets on both, along with a clip of the movie and a bit of the novel. It'd be great if for homework you guys were to try to read the book and/or watch the whole movie, but I'm not really expecting it."

Daisy hit the lights, and a twenty minute moddable clip of the movie started up. When it was done, she turned the lights back on. "Okay, for those who didn't fall asleep, let's start discussing. What did you notice about the movie? What were the themes? How are they different from the themes in the book excerpt? What wouuld you do differently?"

[ooc: I swear, the next class will be better. I've been distracted by shoulder issues and am in a bit of a rush to post this from work. OCD on its way is up.]

"So... anyone else think the Duplicants were the victims, here?" Cassie asked.

She also wondered if the Harrison Ford guy was secretly was a duplicant.

That would be kinda hot.

"Well, I think the film already shows that," Cassie said. "It makes you double think about them, as if they aren't just machines but people."

"Well, the duplicant that always reminds me of Perth Tristow in her wigs? She's really nice to that aged skin guy," Cassie said.

Broots was nearly bouncing in his seat. "I still say Ford's character is an android. Like, do you know that all the androids get called by their first names and the humans by their last names but the main character gets called by both. Except in the book he's human."

"Well, the author for one. Also, the book says that he passed the test thingy and he's married and there's just a lot of stuff."

"The director thought it would look cool on screen?"

"Um...because it would be more dramatic and make people think more and question their own humanity?"

JD has nodded off by the end of the film, and is smiling in his sleep.

"PLEASE DON'T DROWN ME IN CHOCOLATE PUDDING!" he shouted, as he jumped into wakefulness.

He looked around, groggily. Hoping no one heard him. Which was unlikely.

"Yes. One Hundred Percent. Totally here and paying attention." JD said emphatically.

JD's eyes widened in momentary panic, before he put his confident face on.

"I think it was an interesting statement on the future of society if we continue along our current path," he deadpanned.

Please be right. Please be right.

JD offers what he hopes are two insightful examples from the first half the film. He, however, says nothing about the second half and silently hopes she doesn't notice.
