Engineering 101, Wednesday Period 2, Lesson Two, January 17

Geordi was waiting in front of his desk as he watched the students come into the room and sit at their own desks. Once everyone was seated he smiled and began the lecture, “Good morning,” he said, “today we’re going to be looking at a history of engineering,”

He picked up a sheet of paper that the students would find on their desks. “As you can see from the information on your desks the history of engineering is complex,”

On their desks students would find information sheets relating to the history of science and the
history of technology. There is also details about engineering on the type of starships that exist in the Federation in Geordi’s universe. There was also other related information as well.

“So based on this information what can we learn from this?” Geordi asked, “is there a point to the continual evolution? Is there an actual goal in these scientific revolutions? Now I’d like you to give your views on this, remember there is no right or wrong answer,” he motioned at one of the students for them to speak.

Rikku puts her hand up nervously. "I don't know if this is what you mean, but I think people are always trying to get a way to get machina to do more things and better things with less power. I don't think that's bad or anything, it's just what is, you know? If you can make a mech that will patrol a road, for security, then maybe you could make a better one that could patrol twice as fast, or catch things the other one missed, or not use as many parts." She shrugged. "If someone can create something, maybe someone else can improve it. Maybe all these starship people were the same. Just looking for a way to do things better, or easier. That's the whole point of machina in the first place, isn't it?"

"I think that we, as a people, invent tech to fill a need, or make things easier, but eventually, someone uses it for war. So... the end result of technology is death. And? Quarts of mint chocolate chip ice cream, occasionally available freeze-dried."

"I think the goal is discovery for the sake of discovery. It's what we're good at. The human race has been discovering new ways to improve our situation since we became human. It's hardwired into our brains to want to know things, to want more than what we have, and science is the way to do that. Scientific revolutions happen when the political and social climate is right and when you get a group of solid scientific minds getting the right education and having the right opportunity. The variables are incredible, but it's happened a couple of times with the Ancient Egyptians and the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, not to mention the advent of the space age and the Technological Revolution of the late 20th century. We're moving so fast now that it keeps happening more and more. We're actually living inside the Technological Revolution now, both in my time and whatever year it is here. It's on-going. We've reached a point where we can't stop. Everyone has a taste for it now and in our consumer-driven society, we've been trained to want more and more. Only science and technology can provide that."

Willow took detailed notes. It was what she did.

Peter did not at all look amused at Willow's detailed and frantic note-taking.

Re: During the Lecture

Willow gave him a look to indicate one shouldn't mock the notes one might be copying later.

Peter gave her an innocent look that indicated he would certainly never dream of copying her notes. Mainly because his hand would cramp up with all that writing.

Willow gave him a look to indicate she thought he looked cute when he tried to look innocent.

Peter slid her a note. Written in the one pen he brought to class. Did you forget your green pen?

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow looked confused. She rummaged in her bag for both her green pen and highlighter. She held them up, silently offering to let him borrow them if he wanted.

Which was a great sign of trust on her part.

He shook his head, grinning and tried not to all out laugh in class.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow thought about it. She put the green pens down and rummaged in her bag. She proudly held up a blue highlighter, in case that was the color he wanted.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He shook his head again, still grinning, and sent another note towards her. I don't need a pen. My one is enough.

You could run out of ink Willow wrote back, looking woeful.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter held up the extra cartridge for his pen.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow smiled proudly at him.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
He shook his head and chuckled before passing another note. Seems odd Bridge isn't here.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow frowned. You noticed that too? Maybe I should make copies of my notes for him.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure he'd appreciate it Peter wrote back, also frowning.

Re: During the Lecture

Maybe he's sick? Willow wrote back. She added a worried frowney face.

AMi took detailed notes, used a highlighter on her handouts, the works.

Broots was typing away at his laptop. Whether it was notes or not was anyone's guess.

Rikku noticed the sources at the bottom of the first sheet, and phrases like "History of Machine Tools" practically jumped off the page and danced for her.

She began circling references and scribbling notes frantically on the back of the sheet. They had entire books about this! Now, she just had to find them.

Rikku's notes were a mess, but at least she understood them.

Tannim took notes, when he wasn't doodling in the margins.

Peter took detailed notes while trying to work out the whole spaceship thing. If he could bring this kind of technological know-how back home with him, he might someday be able to trump Tony Stark with space flight engineering.

John was taking fairly accurate notes, and totally not drawing catapults and pianos being flung by catapults.

Just wanted to let you know that Bridge is not skipping- he has, in fact, been (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/1349680.html) kidnapped (http://multiplez.livejournal.com/7418.html) so if you could please not give him detention for missing class? :)
