As seen on tv: Forensic Science, 1/17 5th Period

Abby welcomed the students into the danger room by handing out lab coats and directing them to the lab. "Last week was excellent, I'm totally impressed by your work! Because you guys turned out to know more than I thought, I'm bumping up the lessons plans. Today we're going to be focusing on two techniques."

"We're going to be looking for leftovers today. Leftover blood and leftover residue from a gun." Abby gave a quick lecture on the history, chemical basics and uses of Luminol. She didn't really care if you were taking notes or not. "What you need to remember for today's class is 'wetter is better'. Don't skimp on spraying the solution. You don't want to let the bad guy get off because you were nervous about getting the drapes soggy. Once you've sprayed the solution, use the portable blacklights to determine whether or not there's a glow."

"Next we're going to test for gunshot residue." Abby grinned and held up a plastic arm off a mannequin. "This is Creepy Pete, the criminal. He's going to help you learn today, aren't you, Pete?" The hand didn't respond. Running through a history of the chemicals used and the methods employed to test for gunshot residue, Abby finished up by grabbing a tube and brush. "It's easy as pie. You brush on the activator and then hold the hand under a special light. Ta-da! Creepy Pete has been up to no good."

Abby rubbed her hands together excitedly and pointed towards the crime scene door. "Now for the fun part! Today's crime scene is a mystery that you need to solve. The police found young Sam, the victim of an apparent suicide. But there are some concerns." Abby led the way to the doorway so that the students could see the crime scene, a small bedroom with light blue walls, a desk and chair, carpeted floors. Then there was the bed where Sam Winchester lay, seemingly dead, one hand lying on his chest and the sheet beneath his head slick with dried blood.

"Now," Abby had allowed a few moments for the crime scene to sink before speaking. "The first officers on the scene found a gun in Sam's hand, just lying across his chest. Such a perfect placement like that after shooting yourself in the head seemed a little iffy and add the fact that there's no blood spatter on the bed and you've got a possibility that this case isn't as open and shut as it looks. Check out the room with the the luminol and then check out Sam for gunshot residue. Pick up your handouts and your tools from the lab and then get to work. Use the evidence to figure out what happened and then catch the bad guy."

Parker took a drink of Caf-Pow, winced, then started to get to work, stretching out the glove on the mannequin's hand.

"Hey, you," Zero asked Parker, "Did you have a whole bunch of weird e-mails from Xander in your inbox this morning?"

Re: Lab

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes! You did too?" And the rest is being played out momentarily. "I actually have an explanation for that." Parker stopped checking for gunshot residue. "Okay, actually, I don't, but I have more news. Oh, and did you read the e-mails?"

"No, I just said they were weird without reading them. I'm judgmental like that." Zero rolled her eyes at Parker.

Parker grinned, but had to roll her eyes too. "I can't believe they got that Faith chick out of prison. She tried to kill him once."

"She WHAT?" Zero screeched, almost dropping her evidence-glove. "Um. Maybe there were extenuating circumstances?"

"You know, I'd like to think that, because the Faith we had here the year before wasn't that nuts, but... no. Doubtful. She was in prison for murder and other things." Parker shook her head, looking frazzled. "Oh. But not the weirdest thing today, oh no."

"Did the weirdest thing involve squirrels?" Zero prompted.

"No, but it probably will by tonight." Parker started to grin, then couldn't stop. "He's back. Xander's back."

Parker shot her hands over her head, sprinkling chemical over the bench as she did a victory dance. "Back back back in Fandom on the Island here in town he's BACK!"

Zero ducked away from the chemical spray and said, "That's great!"

Re: Lab

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
"It is. It is." Parker smiled, then sobered. "Bridge, Z, and Angela are missing, though. Not so great." She held the light to the mannequin hand, and frowned at the lack of residue. "Anders is organizing something to look for Bridge and Z, at least. There's a lead on them. Not on Angela."

"Squall," Zero said. "We're droppin' like flies, seems like. Hey, lookit that," she said after a moment, frowning at her mannequin hand. "No residue."

Re: Lab

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah." Parker said. "Suicide, my ass. At least the schoolwork here is more straightforward than anything day-to-day." She glared at the results, thinking of another 'suicide', then nodded shortly. "And now we can nail the killer."

Re: Lab

"Do they have a really tall guy in the suspect pool?" Zero asked. "Because Sam's a big guy to hold down."

Re: Lab

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I do believe they do," Parker said, glancing over to the line-up. "And he looks pretty strong, to leave that bruise on Sam's chest. If he's got gunshot residue, or blood on his clothes, I'd say we're set."

Zero did a little boogie. "Go team us!"

Lana checked for gunpowder residue, not finding much of anything, then went over everything she'd discovered so far. Definitely didn't seem like a suicide.

Zack tested the gloves, frowning at the lack of gunpowder residue.

Zero had some trouble getting her glove on her mannequin's hand, but eventually she was victorious and set about testing for gunshot residue. While, yes, mainlining Caf-Pow.

Ami brought the glove back, and trying the caf-pow tried to figure out if there was gun residue on the glove.

Lucas tested the glove for residue, but found none. Definitely not suicide. He tried Caf-Pow, having never tasted it before. An experimental sip turned into a cautioned gulp, which in turn resulted in the draining of the bottle.

He belched quietly into his hand.
