Revolutions: Week 2 Period 5

When the students came into the classroom, Aly was writing a list of criteria on the whiteboard at the front of the class.  She finished up the last point, flipped it around, and turned around to watch everyone find seats.

"Good afternoon, all," she said with a bit of a grin as she seated herself on the top of her desk.  "Last week we talked about the reasons why you personally would rebel against a government.  What I'd like you to do today is to get together in small groups - two or three - and agree within the group and why you - as a group - would rebel against something.  You can determine what you're rebelling against.  Revolutions aren't put together by one person.  It's always a group effort.  So today, let's start that."  She glanced at the avowed monarchists in the class.  "And you have to decide on some criteria.  Saying it is never appropriate won't fly today."

Aly stood up to flip the whiteboard back so the class could see what was written on it.  "This is the list of the criteria that you guys came up with last week.  Use it as a jumping off point, don't feel limited by it."

  • When the current system of rule has proven itself tyrannical
  • When it's for the betterment of the people
  • Rebellions are never appropriate
  • When what is expected of you is unreasonable, and there's no other way to change things
  • When the government or whoever is in charge is making things sucky for people
  • To keep the rulling power from becomming too corrupt
  • Rebellions are always appropriate
  • When you've got nothing else left to lose
  • When the current government structure is not complying with their own stated aims, has contravened previously guaranteed citizen's rights without sufficient cause, and refuses peaceful elections or a change over in power
  • To restore the rightful government
  • If the damage the ruler was inflicting on the country outweighed loyalty to the government
  • When the government no longer represents the people it governs
  • When people under tyranny think they've been ground to the breaking point.
  • When the current government fails in it's duty to the people
  • When the general mass of the public can no longer with stand the demands of their current power structure, or when they find that the structure in place no longer serves its function or purpose.

After Aly had finished going through the list, she glanced over the class again.  "After you come up with a group reason, someone from the group should present these reasons to me and the class."  She grinned.  "I'll ask questions.  For next week, I'd like everyone to write me a quick three page paper on a revolution of some sort.  It can be from this world or your own.  Just look at the reasons behind the revolution and then make your own judgement on whether or not it was legitimate and if you'd've supported it."  She hopped back up on her desk, playing with her necklace.  "If you don't have any questions, go to."

[OOC: Wait for the OCD is up!  Paper is handwavy, of course, but if you could have some idea of what was written about, that would be excellent.  *plots*]

Anders was kind of hoping Bridge would work with him on this, 'cause you know, best friend and all. But hey. Anything for a distraction right now, really.

Steerpike hadn't been paying a whole lot of attention last week. "You weren't one of the fools who said that rebellion was never appropriate, were you?"

"Hey, I am all in favor of a little rebellion when it's necessary," Anders said. He hadn't been paying a whole lot of attention last week either. "Didn't know you were in this class, Walter."

Steerpike briefly considered and then discarded the idea of pretending to be Walter at this juncture. "He isn't, as far as I know. I am Steerpike."

"Oh, gotcha. Another one," Anders said off-handedly. "Sorry about that, man. Hopefully Bridge is gonna join us too, but you up for working on this thing together?"

"It is not as though I am bursting with other options. And I did approach you."

"True," Anders conceded. "So, got any ideas about what we're rebelling against?"

"The stupid, rich royalty? I find they're often an appropriate target."

"Just the stupid rich ones, though, right? As opposed to, say, the fairly well-off ones who can at least string a couple of sentences together?"

"I believe in equality," Steerpike said. "If they're 'fairly well-off', that means they have more money that most. And that isn't right."

Anders eyed him and had a sudden urge to jump into a wheel barrow and wave a red tablecloth. "Okay, so what do you suggest we do after we overthrow them?"

"Redistribute the wealth. Even better, eliminate money all together."

"It needn't happen instantaneously. It's a matter of starting small and working one's way up. Spreading the word."

Re: [Rev 1/16] - Small Groups!

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"So we're talking long-term project here. Got it. We'll need something to replace money with, though, or people are going to look at us kind of funny when we start spreading the word."

"Bartering. Those who are skilled at one thing provide that service in return for services which they aren't as skilled at. It's quite simple, really."

"Precisely. Equality."

"Plus saying we're fighting for equality sounds kind of harmless. Good PR is always a bonus."

"Hey," Bridge says, trying for a smile. He succeeds- sort of. "Wanna work together?"

Re: [Rev 1/16] - Small Groups!

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure," Anders replies, with a sort-of-successful smile of his own. "Like you had to ask, dude?"

Re: [Rev 1/16] - Small Groups!

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Didn't know if you had someone else in mind, maybe," Bridge shrugs.

"Well, if you don't mind, uh . . ." He chucks a thumb in Steerpike's direction. "This dude working with us. But you know I'm always up for doing stuff with my best bud."

"Not at all," Bridge says, eyeing the person in question. Usually he has no trouble telling doubles apart- but not having his powers makes that harder. He guesses that since Anders didn't refer to him by name that this must be... Peerstrike? Deerpike? He can't quite remember the name exactly.

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well then, we're good," Anders says. "Sort of."

He'd notice that Bridge seems kind of out of it, except that he's kind of out of it himself.
