Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class One [Period 5, Thursday]

The students were greeted with an empty classroom as they filed in.

Once everyone was seated, Ares appeared in a flash of blue light. "Greetings," he said. "I am Ares, God of War, and before you all start with the questions and flailing and prostrating yourself before me in worship, yes I am the Ares, and I am a real god. I'll be happy to give a demonstration to anyone who doesn't believe me." His tone suggested that while he might be happy to give a demonstrate, the person he gave it to wouldn't be.

"Now, to class. I'm assuming you all signed up because you want to learn more about the gods," Ares said, leaning against his desk. "Believe me you will. Forget the drunken ramblings of half-mad priests and madder politician, from me you'll be hearing firsthand accounts of the gods, in all their glorious and less than glorious moments. As you can see from the syllabus, we will be focusing on the Greek pantheon, otherwise known as the Olympians. Because, hey, you can't escape family."

"Because this is the first class, and I realise you may all be somewhat awed by being taught by me, a real live god, I'm going to go easy on you all, trust me, it won't happen again. Today you're just going to introduce yourself, tell the class which gods and goddesses you worship and why."

He waved a dismissive hand at the class. "Well, what are you waiting for, go on."

Anders was kind of wishing he had a camera. How many kids back home could say they took a class taught by one of the Lords of frakking Kobol?

Evie is already resigned to keeping two notebooks in this class, the Official Version, and the Professor Ares version. She hasn't decided yet if Ares is more or less mad than Professor Covington, or more or less powerful than any of the students at the school.

He's very very handsome, though.

Liz had definitely not expected to be taking a class with the actual Greek God of War, so as she took down some notes she was trying to figure out how to explain to Hellboy in her letter when she got around to replying, who her Religions professor was without her sounding like she'd completely lost it.

Tapped her pen to her notebook, chin in hand, staring at her professor.

Nice looking, in a big, loud sort of way. I really want to see the blue light again. Or anything. Something else, really.

She took her camera out and snapped his picture.

At some point during the lecture, Steerpike glanced Annette's way and gave her a smile and a wave.

Steerpike gave an internal wince and eye roll that didn't appear on his face. "Quite well, thank you. And yourself?"

"Doing pretty good." She replied easily. "So, did you find a job yet?"

"I did. I now work on Wednesdays at the Photo Hut."

"Oh, that is great for you!" She held up her camera for him to see. "I bought this there last week. It works great." She brought it to her eyes and snapped his picture.

Steerpike had, in fact, never actually seen one of these camera things in action, and the flash had him blinking rapidly.

"Marvelous."

She twisted her lips. Eeeep!

"Sorry. It can be kind of bright. It's the flash. Sorry." She held the picture out for him to see. "See? It's a great picture even if you are not smiling or anything."

Cameron looked tired and he seemed to be distracted as he was more doodling in his notebook than actually writing things down.

Thankfully, you didn't need many notes during this class, anyway. Though the perpetual eyerolling was going to give Janet a headache.

"Between and Hades of the flaming hair as our new VP, I'm starting to think Fandom's become a minor vacation spot for bored Greek gods," Isabel whispered.

Janet nodded. "If someone put a travel brochure out, I'm going to find them, and sabotage their printing press," she whispered.

"I swear, cause otherwise we're liable to have Aphrodite show up around Valentine's day." Isabel made a face, "In theory, that sounds like a good idea. But it's Fandom. Something would definitely go wrong."

"Oh, please no," said Janet, looking horrified. "I can only begin to imagine the many horrifying things that could happen. I think Murphy's Law must apply ten times more strongly here than anywhere else."

"Seriously. Xander talked about his home being over a Hellmouth, honestly I think this place is just on a nexus of weird or something," she said, shaking her head. "I'm sure that's why Murphy's happens the way it does."

"That's about as good an explanation as any I've heard," said Janet, stifling a giggle. "Nexus of weird. I like that. So what other classes do you have this semester?"

"It just works. And it covers so many different possibilities." Isabel closed her eyes and thought, it was still too early in the semester to remember all her classes off the top of her head. "I've got Revolutions, Hunting, this, and then tomorrow I've got Survival Tactics and Villians. What's scary is this is about the only class I can possibly talk to my parents about. Really mom, it's just a class about Greek Mythology."

"You could call the other classes something different instead," said Janet. "Revolusions could be, I don't know, Sociology instead, and Hunting could be Wilderness Biology. You can call Survival Tactics something like Phys Ed, and Villains could be, um, Abnormal Psych."
