As seen on tv: Forensic Science, 1/9 5th Period

When the students came into the danger shop they entered into a lab that seemed straight from the heart of a police department or right off the set of a TV show. There were computers, microscopes, containers and tubes and just about every forensic doodad that you could imagine. Abby stood at the door and handed labcoats to everyone and pointed them to a row of stools around the edges of the room.

"Hey guys, I'm Professor Abby and I'll be teaching you the basics of forensics science this semester. Since I would be bored out of my brain teaching you things on paper, we're going to take a more hands on approach. I'm assuming that at least most of you have seen a TV show were they solved the case by using forensic science. They matched the fingerprints on the gun. They traced the carpet fibers. They figured out whodunit by using forensics."

"In this class you're going to be learning forensics by doing the same thing as the scientists on those shows. You're going to solve a crime." Abby pulled her lab coat tighter and motioned to a door on one side of the lab. "Follow me."

As the students stepped from the lab they walked into a dark deserted parking lot. A single flickering street lamp illuminated one corner of the lot where a blonde girl lay half against a wall amidst broken bottles, trash and puddles of water.

"This is Isabel. She's dead." Abby said, stopping about halfway across the lot. From this distance they could see that Isabel was unmarked, but it was hard to tell in the light if she was breathing or not. All in all, a pretty convincing display. "You're going to try and figure out how she died and who killed her using what you know and my nifty handout. You can work alone or in pairs or teams. Whatever you want. This week we're going to be focusing on prints that aren't fingerprints."

Passing out the handouts, Abby continued talking. "You're in high school. I'm not expecting you to know everything yet. So don't worry about knowing how to do everything on the handout. When in doubt...ask a question. I'll be around and there's always Isabel. You'd be surprised at how talkative a dead person can be."

"Anyone wanna team up?" billy asked, as he first went to examine the brick wall.

"Are we allowed to team up?" Ami asked quietly, as she too went to look at Isabel. Who she dearly hoped was not actually dead.

"I thought I heard Abby say we could yeah." Billy said. "See anything of interest there proby?"

The body was hanging out and having fun being dead, but Isabel was also prepared to answer questions that would have been answered during an autopsy.

Ami felt silly doing this. "Um, oh body of dead Isabel tell me your um temperature slash time of death, so i do not have to stick anything into your liver." she added "please"

Isabel clutched her stomach protectively. "Yes, please don't. Time of death was 2:00 a.m."

Zero peered down at the body. "I'm guessing you don't want us to cut you up, so you wanna tell me how you died?" she asked Isabel.

"No, I'll pass," Isabel said shaking her head. "The cause of death was head trauma. Unfortunately there's not enough tylenol in the world to help me."

"Come on, it could be worse. I could have people swimming in my blood stream," Isabel laughed. "Broken ribs, contusions, internal bleeding, some broken fingers. It pretty much sucks to be me."

And the roommate's girlfriend was the corpse. This school was warped. "I remember you being a lot more alive, but even though you're dead you make a very...pretty corpse." Lucas was, on occasion, a dork. "Hokay," he said, choking out a nervous laugh. "Time of death?"

Rikku sat down next to the blonde girl and hugged her knees. "Are you okay?"

It seemed disrespectful to be looking for evidence while she was still right here.

Lana had been listening to the others question the body so she had a pretty good idea of what was going on. "Hi, poor dead Isabel," she said. "Let me see if I have this right. Time of death is 2AM. Cause of death was head trauma. Other injuries include, broken ribs, contusions, internal bleeding, and some broken fingers. Wallet and cell phone stolen."

"Any bruises? Footprints? DNA not from you on the scene?"

"Ummm, so... what's your liver temperature?" Cassie asked.

A class about dealing with dead people might have been a poor choice for her.

Hermione might have a problem with pretending someone she knows is dead if she wasn't in OMG This Is School mode. As it is, this is just an exercise. "Hello," she greets Isabel, poised to take notes. "Would you like to tell me your time of death?"

Alphonse blinked at his handout, double checking what was on it before glancing at Isabel. "Er, hi there," he began awkwardly; doing this exercise felt more than a little strange. "Happen to know when you died?"

Will felt a little nauseous at the scene. Professor Scuito seemed to be really good at recreating accurate crime scenes.

"Uh, hi," said Will awkwardly to the corpse. "So, any tips on how you died? Or who did this to you?"

"So... uh... wow. Are you really 'dead' or are you a zombie? And hwo'd you end up here?"

Talking to a corpse was something completely new, Caritas aside.
