Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Lab Fourteen

As always, students have their pick of a nice arrangement of breakfast treats and beverages. The seating has been arranged into more of a circle than the usual pairs, and in one of the chairs is seated a blond boy in his mid-teens.

"Good morning, everyone! I want to remind everyone that your final projects are due in the box in my office by the end of the day.

This has been an amazing experience for me, and I want to thank all of you again for making my first teaching job such an enjoyable one.

Today, since it's our very last day, we're going to forego the usual experiments. Instead, we have a guest speaker, who's going to tell you a little bit about his experiences with being the subject of a prophecy. Class, this is an acquaintance of mine from Lower Tadfield, Adam Young."

"Very possibly, yeah," Adam said.

"What do you like to do when you're not thwarting prophecies?"

"Play with my friends or Dog," Adam said. "What else is there?"

Pippi thought about it.

"Ice cream?"

"Not as many flavors in Tadfield," Adam said. "But I like it. You really do have 39 flavors here, don't you?"

"That's an American thing ya... I think there's more then 39 by now actually... I'll have to go down to the ice cream shop and count."

Adam smiled. "Might have to stop by there, myself."

Pippi clapped her hands.

"We should all go together! And we could show you around town... But we should probably avoid the dance club..."

"I'm not one for dancing, anyways," Adam said.

"It's a boring place, they don't serve the good drinks to people under 21." Pippi nodded.

"Drinking isn't for kids, anyways," Adam said. "Why do adult stuff too early?"

"Who gets to say what's 'adult stuff' and what's 'kid stuff'? Adults like strong drinks because it makes 'em act funny. I can act funny on my own, I just like the taste."

Adam looked at Pippi funny. "Everyone knows what's kid stuff and adult stuff."

"So adults don't ever get to eat ice cream, or climb trees or go swimming?"

"I dunno," Adam said. "I can't imagine my dad doing any of those."

"I can't imagine that growing up means an end of fun. It's not fair to tell a person that they can or can't do something just because of their age. Any more then it is to tell a person that they must or mustn't do something because there's some dumb 'ol prophesy."

Adam shrugged. "I think you think too much," he said. "Better to just have fun while you can."

Pippi thinking too much? That's a new one.

"Having fun while you can means you think that there's an end to fun. And that doesn't need to be the case."

"Everything has to end eventually," Adam said.

Pippi shook her head.

"There are no endings, only changes."

Adam gave Pippi a look. A look that said 'I agree with you, but I wish I'd have thought of that first'.

"Some changes are just like endings, though," he said. Stubborn 'til the end.

"They can certainly seem to be so." Pippi nodded diplomatically.

Definitely a bit like Pepper, Adam thought.

"Got any other questions? This prophecy stuff is kinda boring, don't you think?"

"We been studying it all semester, I certainly wouldn't mind a change of subject." Pippi agreed.
