As the students enter the classroom, they may notice first of all that there’s a spread of scones, muffins, danishes, cinnamon rolls, and other breakfast pastries. Accompanied, of course, by coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and cider. The second thing they may notice is that the room has been decorated with twinkling lights, sparkly paper snowflakes, and fresh evergreen garland.

Aziraphale is sitting in his chair, looking very pleased to be back.

LECTURE: “First off, let me just tell all of you how much I missed being here for your last couple of classes, and especially how sorry I am for missing the pageant. James has videotaped it, however, and I want you to know how very proud I am of you all.” He eyed Marty slightly for a moment, then continued. “Now, today is our second-to-last lab. We’re going to do some rune-casting, and then I want you to take the remainder of the period to work on your final projects, which will be due next Friday. Also, since I myself have missed a class and a lab, I’m forgiving any absences during the time I was away. However, I do expect to see you all in both classes next week.

“Now, let’s move on today’s topic: runic divination.”

Aziraphale gave a brief lecture on the subject ~~which I am too tired to write~~ and passed around handouts for the lab exercise. “Please use this material to do a casting for yourself or your lab partner.”

HOMEWORK: “Please remember that at the beginning of the term, you were all told that there would be a class project required as part of your grade. This project is due next week. There will be a drop box outside my office each day where you can hand your project in, or you can bring it with you to next Friday’s lab.

“I’ll be in my office briefly after class today if anyone needs to see me, or you can catch me here after class.”

"Have you thought about getting a job?" Blair asked.

"Huh?" Bel said. "A job? Doing what?"

"Something meaningful. Something that would make you feel useful and not...hollow." Blair shrugged. "Maybe working down at the clinic helping people. Or helping out Caritas with security or doing the safewalks for the students."

Bel frowned. "I'm not working at the clinic with that dick of a doctor," he said. "Besides, what could I do there that's useful?"

"Helping people, man." Blair bounced. "Just because you don't have special powers doesn't mean you can't do something to help people out."

"I don't have any medical training," Bel pointed out. "And I'm not even half as strong as I used to be."

"Okay, so maybe you can't help at the clinic. But just because you're not half demon doesn't mean you don't have skills." Blair said with a shrug. "The demon may be gone but your brain is still intact. Use some of the skills you learned to help people now."

"Oh! What about a hall monitor? You could help keep people away from the lockers and tidy up and make sure no one gets beat up in the hallway. Even not 'half as strong' you're still a big guy."

Bel stared blankly at Blair. "No. Just...no."

"You could be a bouncer for one of the places in town." Blair said. "Except not The Devil's Nest."

"Why not the Devil's Nest?" Bel asked, leaning toward Blair a little. "I've been meaning to check it out since the new management took over."

"Drinks are very expensive?" Blair said in an effort to dissuade Bel from coming.

"So I'll only have one or two," Bel said. He wasn't being difficult on purpose.

"Uh-huh." Blair thought briefly about telling Bel there were cockroaches or a big cover charge or pink ruffled tablecloths but he figured that Bel would know he was lying and make more of an effort to go.

"Do you know who the new management is?"

"No, who is it?" Bel said.

"Lucifer. Like...the Lucifer."

Bel blinked. "No way," he said.

"Yes way, man." Blair nodded. "He's retired and running the nest now."

"Huh," Bel said, not quite sure what to make of it. "That's...interesting."

Blair looked at the floor. "I might have sort of mentioned you to him and he might kinda want to meet you."

"But I don't know if that's such a good idea right now."

"What were you thinking, Blair?" Bel said, a little worried now. "Mentioning me to another demon?"

"I'm sorry!" Blair winced. "I didn't mention your name or anything! We were just talking about protesting and demons and I just told him my best friend was one."

"Really, it's not like he knows your name or anything."

Bel relaxed a little. "He'd probably just be like Crowley and want to point and laugh at me anyway," he said. "Especially now."

"I don't know about laughing, he doesn't really seem to be the sort." Blair said. "Also, don't mention horns and tails because it makes him angry."

"Or pictures. Or puppies. Or dancing. Or sex. Or jobs."

It was obvious Blair had been asking a few too many questions.

Bel stared at Blair. "You're very odd," he said.

"Thanks!" Blair grinned and bounced. Because he really did think it was a compliment.
