After everyone filed in and signed in, the Doctor turned on the holoprojector, which projected a large chess board in a peculiar set up.

"Take a few minutes to look at this. It's a puzzle. Black can win in one move. Think hard. Now if anyone thinks they know the move, let me know now."

After talking about the puzzle, the Doctor cleared his throat.

"The reason I point this out is that this puzzle allowed me to trap an ancient evil, an evil from before the dawn of time. It called itself Fenric, known also in Norse mythology as Fenrisulfr, the monstrous wolf that will devour Odin during Ragnarök. Fenric was powerful, able to destroy me without batting an eye."

The Doctor then went on about Fenric at a bit of length.

He grinned.

"So I beat him by being clever, outsmarting him. And using the same principles in the chess puzzle against him, as well as the actual puzzle itself. He was unable to grasp the twist, the complete unpredictability. And here is the lesson you should walk away not only from this class, but the course in general."

"Think differently. Conforming to the mold is all well and good, but being creative, now, that's what makes you an individual. Being quick to think will make you able to overcome all obstacles, and give you a real edge in the world that lies out there. Next week, a boring old written exam. Please keep these concepts I've told you today in mind when you take said boring exam. Now, I open today up to questions, or you just chattering about at your desks. Got it? Fantastic."

"They didn't say anything about it growing!" Stark said, eyeing the egg warily. "So it, she won't grow into anything. I hope. It's supposed to teach us something, pretending the egg is a baby. But I'm not sure what. Or why."

"It doesn't cry or make messes or need nappies, I imagine," Door says doubtfully, if a little fondly, remembering when there were babies in her house.

"It hasn't done anything yet," Stark confirmed. "Just sits there. Which is fine, really."

"She's very well-behaved," Door says with a nod. Hey, if her robot bird can be a she, so can Stark's egg.

"She's a very good egg," Stark said with a grin. "At least as far as I know. I hope she stays that way."

Door pretends to look doubtful. "I don't know - Rory's a bit of a wild, undependable influence... Horrible student, too."

After a slightly confused pause, Stark nodded. "Oh, yes. But she'll have me. I'm a calming, dependable influence. Really." Yes, he knew exactly how ridiculous that sounded.

Door can't help giggling. "Actually I can't imagine anybody who'd take better care of a class project than Rory. I doubt you'll need to worry about anything happening to Sheila while she's on watch."

"Not worried," Stark said. "Rory will take good care of her. As long as noone eats her, everything will be fine. Sheila, not Rory. I don't think there is much danger of anyone eating Rory."

"I should hope not!"

"Me too," Stark agreed. Figuring that perhaps a change of topic was in order, because people getting eaten was never really pleasant, he gestured at the chess board projection. "Do you know the game?"

"A bit." Door studies the board. "My father taught us all the basic rules, but my brother was the one with a talent for it."
