Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice: Lab Twelve - Period 2

Wilson had carefully dethawed and in some instances reheated the baked goodies that Phale had made and left for his Prophecy class. Schleping them up to the school, the young doctor headed into the class room and supressed a sigh at the homey configuration that reminded him of it's missing professor.

Setting up the baked nummies along with a group of hot beverages ranging from cider to cocoa, Wilson got himself some hot cider and a few gingersnap cookies and then settled down in an armchair to wait for the students to arrive.

When everyone was settled and in their seats, Wilson stood up, carefully took roll then set his cider aside for a moment.

"Good morning. As I'm sure you are all aware, Professor Aziraphale has had to leave us for a bit and I am helping his TAs cover his classes. Aziraphale left behind handouts for today's lab exercises and if you have any questions about the material, please speak with Miss Halliwell or Miss Belacqua. I will also be here if you have any general questions or concerns. Also, I wanted to let you all know that I am looking forward to today's performance. I have a video camera and will be taping it for Aziraphale to enjoy if when he returns."

Giving the class a reassuring smile, Wilson walked to where the handouts were sitting on the desk and began to pass them out to the class.



LAB TWELVE (FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, SECOND PERIOD)

LECTURE: Onomancy (also sometimes referred to as onomamancy)is the process of divination through one’s name. This style is more frequently seen in China and Japan, where the characters used to spell a name also hold other meanings. It can, however, be done using the traditional meanings of Western names as well.

Graphology, or handwriting analysis, also has a parallel in the
scientific world. The difference is that while the science of analyzing handwriting is done to produce an understanding of the writer’s personality, the divinatory skill is used to produce a prediction for the writer.

"That's good." Wilson agreed and then, because it was what brought him over here in the first place, he just went ahead and asked.

"Bel, what's up with your jacket?"

Because that had worked so well with Phoebe earlier.

Bel...was the world's worst liar.

"Belthazor?" Eyebrow twitch, hands on hips.

"It's nothing!" Bel said. Flailing his arms might have opened his jacket a little, revealing the gun tucked into his pants.

Why yes that was the sound of Wilson's palm hitting his face.

"Bel..."

Sliding his hand down across his mouth, Wilson looked at his young friend with a resigned expression.

"Hand it over." He said, holding his hand out for the gun.

"It's mine!" Bel said defensively. "I need it!"

Wilson set his hands on the desk and leaned down so his voice might not carry.

"Not in the school, Belthazor. You are breaking one of the biggest school rules carrying that thing. Hand.It.Over."

"What if there's another troll attack!" Bel protested. "Or zombies, or snow monster? I need a way to protect myself!"

"Not IN the school." Wilson reiterated firmly, holding out his hand but using his body to shield Bel from the rest of the class so everybody didn't panic.

"Can I at least put it in my room?" Bel asked hopefully.

"You're room is on school grounds. I'm sorry, Bel but that's still against school rules. It needs to be turned over to the weapons locker. I'll take it there immediately after class and you can check it out there, if and when you need it, like everyone else does." Wilson continued in a tense voice as the full implication of Bel packing washed over him.

How the hell was he going to explain this and keep Bel from getting into trouble...good cranberry on a crutch...mental headdesk.

Oh, yes and the hand was still out there, waiting for the gun.

Bel scowled and pulled the gun out of his pants, fortunately not acidentally firing it and harming something vital. "Here," he said sulkily, passing it to Wilson.

Taking the gun, Wilson very carefully unloaded it and cleared the chamber, then slid the clip into one pocket and the weapon into another.

"Detention, tomorrow." He said softly. "I think you could use the time to think a bit and get your head straight. Honestly, Bel...I expect better thinking from you than to pull a move like this."

Bel was in full on sulk mode now. "I need a way to protect Phoebe and myself," he said. "Now that I don't have my powers or anything."

"Bel, think about it. How often were you stopped by a gun?"

"They can do enough damage to slow somebody down," Bel insisted. "Logan shot me, I know what it does."

Wilson shook his head.

"It'll be in the weapon's locker but honestly Bel, you're insulting your own resourcefulness."

"I have to do something," Bel grumbled, clenching his fists in frustration. "I hate feeling so helpless!"

Hunkering down by the chair, Wilson looked up at Bel. He understood the frustration, oh but did he understand the frustration and it wasn't that he was unsympathetic to Bel's situation it was just...trying to make the best out of the bad.

"Bel, listen to me. Take up self-defense, there are plenty of teachers and other students who could help you. Take up the gun club, you'll get to work with it in a school sanctioned environment which will up your skill level if you need it for real. Catch up with someone like ... oh ... Willow or Blair and go over the material that mortals have been gathering on demons for millenium."

Sighing softly, knowing that these might not seem like good options right now, Wilson gave Bel a wan smile.

"Hey, we mortals must have been doing something right all these years, otherwise the demons would have wiped us out ages ago, right?"

"Yeah, I guess," Bel admitted. "I just hate...feeling like this. It sucks."

Wilson smiled ruefully.

"Believe me, Bel. I know how you feel."

"How do you deal with it?" Bel asked quietly.

He didn't answer immediately, taking his time to feel through the best answer to the question.

"That is not an easy question to answer, Bel because sometimes...it's very hard." He admitted truthfully. "Especially when I see you or Phoebe or any of you kids in danger and I want to protect you but in an out and out fight scenario I'd be more a hinderance than an assistance to you."

"Phoebe's going to want to lock me in our room now whenever there's danger," Bel said unhappily.

"She might." Wilson acknowledged.

"Bel, do you think I like running and ducking while you or Phoebe or Aziraphale are standing and fighting? I hate it but to stay in the line of fire would be irresponsible because it would distract them and possibly cause them injury."

Continuing quickly before Bel could bridle, Wilson held up his hands.

"But, but I'm forty years old and I live by my oath to do no harm. To that end I have never learned how to fire a gun, how to kickbox, karate, unarmed combat, armed combat for that matter, how to make explosive devices...hell Bel, you take John Winchester's class, there is so much you could learn from him of how to still fight, how to protect, skills that can only serve you and your needs and that aren't something that can be twisted and controled beyond your desires."
