Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

"Good afternoon, class!" Ms Frizzle today was wearing an apron over her dress and a giant white Chef's hat nodded on her head. "Next week is the science fair! I hope you've all been working very hard on your projects and I'm sure they're going to be great! But, as today is our last real class together before the exam, we're going to have some fun and bake a cake! Wahoo!"

She flounced over to her lab bench, which had all the ingredients and tools laid out - as well as a very small school bus which was looking distinctly miserable. "Poor thing's caught a cold," she explained. "Too much playing in the snow. Now, class -"

She was interrupted as the bus gave a wriggle, then a jump, and then SNEEZED.

And suddenly the entire class was miniature-bus sized.

Ms Frizzle peered up at the now-giant Liz. "Alright, class! Time to take chances! Get messy! And make - a cake! Everyone to the bus!"

It's conveniently extended a rope ladder to help the students climb up to the work surface.

Pippi climbs the rope ladder.

Molly climbed up after Pippi.

Blair was not happy about the rope ladder, but he climbed up too.

Chad was really, really concerned about the rope ladder, and gave it a few really strong tugs before he'd feel comfortable climbing up.

Luna calmly checked that her wand was stuck firmly behind her ear, then shimmed up the robe like the rest.

Naomi was slightly nervous about climbing up a rope but she still followed everyone else.

Muttering something about climbing ropes being saved for gym class, Jaye climbs the ladder as best she can.

Gwynn climbs up the rope ladder with all of the ease of someone who lived in the forest and used ropes to hide in the trees.

Will took a deep breath before climbing up the rope ladder. Well, if everybody else seemed to make it okay...

Ranma climbs the rope fast. He's nimble like that.

Tyler yanked himself up the rope.

Play with the oversized ingredients. Icing sugar angels completely welcome.

Pippi is, in fact, making an Icing angel.

Of course, none of it was showing on the surface, but, deep down in side, Chad was gleeing at the fact that he felt so itty-bitty. It didn't happen often.

Gwynn has absolutely no idea what any of this is.

Will flopped down in the powder to make a sugar angel, only wondering a little bit if doing this was really all that sanitary.

Giant Liz accidentally knocked some baking soda into a flask of vinegar. Various other chemical reactions are occurring, all of which the Friz is pointing out and explaining.

Baking soda and vinegar volcanoes are sooo cool!

"Do it again!" Molly said.

"Why don't you try it yourself?" Ms Frizzle suggested, balancing on top of an egg like a giant yoga ball. "There's plenty more ingredients!"

"Okay!" Molly said. She scooped up a bunch of the baking soda that had missed the flask and put it in the bowl of a clean spoon.

She looked up at Liz. "Could you add a couple drops of vinegar?" Then she stepped back to watch.

Liz totally didn't flash her a thumbs-up, because lizards are incapable of flashing thumbs-ups. She tilted the bottle of vinegar and sprinkled a few drops on the spoon.

FWOOSH!

"Woo hoo!" Molly said.

"Now don't worry, children," Ms Frizzle told them cheerfully as they wound up in the bus and in the middle of a baking cake in an oven. "The bus is heat-resistant. Observe the chemical reaction around us as the liquid batter is transformed into solid cake! There is no way to reverse this change, as the molecular makeup of the substance has changed itself!"

"Oooh! Look at the little bubbles forming in the batter!"

All this chemical reactions stuff was all well and good, but, as Chad watched, he really couldn't help but wonder about the scientific explaination of how the bus was heat resistant.

There is no scientific explanation. It's the Magic School Bus.

But it's Science (exclamation point) class.

And then Joanna Cole's head exploded.

Will secretly wondered if the explosion was magic too.

"Cooooooooool!" Molly said, face pressed to the window.

Nicely covered in flour, icing sugar, and other bits of baking ingredients, Luna observed all the goings on with mild exterior interest and inner eager curiosity.

As soon as the timer dinged and the Friz's lesson was over, Liz carefully took out the cake and the bus zoomed away, disgorging full-sized students and a teacher. Ms Frizzle carefully tucked the poor bus away in her pocket and grinned at the students. "Cake, anyone?"

"Yes please!"

Ms Frizzle cut her a slice that had part of a bus-shaped hole in it. "There you go! Isn't chemistry delicious?"

"It sure is!"

Even thought it was a little weird to think he was at, one point, inside of that cake, it was still cake, and one does not refuse cake.

Ms Frizzle cut him a proportionately large slice.

. . . good thing it was a small class.

"I would like some too, please."

"Coming right up!" Ms Frizzle cheerfully doled out another slice.

"Yes, please, ma'am."

"Oh, yes please!" said, Will, grinning. "What kind of cake did we end up with?"

Science fair-type stuff:

My students: If I could an email or comment here sometime before the next class with what your topic is and if you have a partner, that would be shiny.

Everyone else: If you're participating, please an email with topic and possible partner. And if you aren't, you're welcome to come by anyway!

Pippi (and possibly a *handwavey* JD depending on if the player is available or not and what the rules on that are), will be doing a display on how gills work.

Pippi is going to demonstrate the workings by eating gillyweed and sitting in a big tank... Possibly dressed up like a mermaid.

*snerk* I am totally fine with a handwavey partner if you guys are. *adds to list*

Naomi's topic will be about space exploration and she's going to do the presentation by showing a model that she's built of Voyager. I'm pretty certain she never wound up with a partner so she'll be doing it alone.

Gwynn's idea?

A rope trap that she and Froderick used to keep soldiers busy for awhile.
