Hunting 101 - Class 13 (Wedensday, period 7)

There were no handouts or items for demonstration visible in the classroom when the students entered today. John was leaning against his desk, hands in his pockets as everybody filed in.

"Good afternoon," he said when people were settled. "We're going to go off the syllabus today and talk about this past weekend. Now that wasn't so much a hunt as an invasion, but the same basic steps apply. And no that the trolls have been beaten off, it's time to look at what we've learned." John smiled slightly. "So consider this a debriefing."

"Most hunters I know keep a journal of some kind, with information on what they've faced and what they've found to be effective. You now have all faced trolls. What would you consider important to know about them?" He paused and let the class discuss this for a while.

"The other thing you need to consider after this kind of situation, is what did you do right, and what would you do differently if you had to do it again? This isn't to beat yourself up about things you did wrong -- but a chance to learn from experience, to do better in the future. So I'd like everyone to give us one thing they did that they're proud of, and one thing that they'd do differently."

"I wouldn't have let myself get kidnapped," Sam said simply.

"You'll be more on your guard next time," John told him with assurance. "What do you think you did well?"

"I did fine," Alec said, completely not speaking of the bandages still tightly wrapped around his middle.

John raised an eyebrow at him. "Nothing you would do differently?"

"I got kidnapped real well," Conner said with a mild note of disgust. "Which I also wouldn't do again."

"Something like that can make you more aware of your surroundings and listening to your instincts," John said.

"That I am too nice to strangers," she said with self-disgust. "I wouldn't get kidnapped. What did I well? Nothing. I was unconscious most of the time from getting hit in the head."

"Being nice or friendly isn't necessarily a bad thing," John said. "You just need to try and remember to keep your guard up at the same time."

"I have an unhealthy attachment to frying pans as weapons," Dawn admitted, "and my fear of guns means I have to improvise and get a lot closer to fight the bad guys."

John smiled faintly at her. "In this case, that frying pan was an effective weapon. Although it's true that sometimes it's safer to have a weapon that will let you fight from a distance. That doesn't necessarily have to be a gun, though."

"Um...I killed trolls, so that's a good thing. But I probably shouldn't have spent that much time chopping off arms and just started decapitating and stabbing. Also? I need to listen to school announcments."

John nodded. "It's always good to be aware of your surroundings and any information in the area. School announcements would defintely fall into that category. And generally, decapitating is definitely going to be more effective in killing something than amputating arms."

"I would have brought a weapon instead of just relying on my powers," Peter said. "Also, I really have to learn how to use weapons better."

"Weapons can give you advantages that you don't have otherwise. On the other hand, if you're relying on your own abilities, there's much less of a chance that you'll be disarmed."

"I'd rather take care of someone I love then go out and join in the fight," John says.

John nodded. "It's always good to have your priorities clear in your own mind. And taking care of loved ones is a very good priority to have."

"I didn't lose my weapon," Seely replied. "Of course, that's also why I got two broken fingers when it fell on me then turned to stone."

"Holding onto your weapon is usually a good instinct to have," John said. "But so is dodging."

"I clearly miss all the good stuff," said Will, with a note of mild disappointment in her voice.

"I'm not sure a troll invasion would be considered 'good stuff' by most people," John said with a smile.

"I spent most of it researching," Hermione says. "I learned that I drive myself mad when I feel I'm not doing something and that sometimes people just need to be hung up on."

"I would have waited to be sure I knew where my girlfriend was before having as much fun as I did."

John nodded. "It's always good to make it a habit to keep track of where those you care about are. Just in case."
