The fact that Ms Frizzle's dress today was camouflage-print and a WWII-era helmet perched on top of her frizzy curls might have been slightly less worrying if not for the stack of blueprints of what looked like heavy artillery on the lab bench in front of her. But first . . .

"Hello, class!" Clap hands together. "Oh, I've missed you! I am very sorry for having been away for so long, but I've heard that the substitutes did very well and you all behaved!" Stand en pointe for no apparent reason. "And I hope you've all been thinking about your projects for the science fair, because it is the week after next If you need any help, remember that you can come see me in the lab on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday!" She bounced forward, her helmet slipping to the side, and quickly righted it.

"As you'll remember, class, we were talking about forces and motion at the beginning of the year. Today, you'll get to put some of those ideas into practice! We're building marshmallow shooters!" She gestured at the stack of blueprints. "I have several ideas to get you starts off. You can use air pressure, you can build a trebuchet, a slingshot, anything at all that will fire a marshmallow any great distance. Work together to come up with more ideas. And when you're ready, see Liz for some ammo and then let 'er fly! WAHOO!"

Draw up plans, build your shooter, talk to other people, lay bets . . .

Molly owned two marshmallow guns and a slingshot that she had used to shoot marshmallows. She looked over the blueprints and wondered how hard it would be to actually build a trebuchet.

Tyler started designing the Super Soaker of marshmallow guns.

She supposed she could always pop down to her boat and bring back her swivel gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swivel_gun)...

Chad started making some idle sketches that mostly looked like trebuchets, but his concerns settled mostly into the fact that, as an already easy target, the bunny ears probably weren't gonna help him out.

There was always "swish and flick" but building something was much more interesting and fun.

Luna had some wire, a feather, two pieces of tissue paper and nifty new thing she'd discovered called tape. It was neat!

Jaye would be a lot more into this if she didn't have to actually work for it. She just wants to shoot people with sugar.

Will kind of liked the idea of building a trebuchet. Nice, fairly basic, and old standard. She started trying to sketch out how exactly that would work.

Liz is asleep on a pile of bags of marshmallows. She's guarding the ammo. Obviously.

One roped-off side of the room has been set up as a shooting alley. There is a target at the other end, but if you feel like shooting the Friz, just wait until she wanders in front of it.

Short one today, guys. Papers have killed my brain.
