Hunting 101 - Class 12 (Wednesday period 7)

The Danger Shop was set up to look like a small village. John and the Impala were parked by the sign saying "Welcome to Hamlin".

"I said last class that when dealing with something that is a little less common, the most valuable thing you can do is research. That's what today's assignment is about. You were on the road and came across a newspaper article talking about a rash of children disappearing from the village of Hamlin. There was one boy, name withheld, whose siblings disappeared, talked about a figure in the night and hearing music. That's all the information you have. And that's more than you would start with on some hunts." John smiled slightly.

"Your assignment is to pair up and find out what's happening here, what's doing it and how to stop it. You can examine the area, talk to the people, go online at the library, whatever you need to do. It's completely up to you."

[OOC: Sorry this is so late; I had an orientation thing for a new job which took longer than I thought it was going to. Wait for OCD's up! Have at it!]

Walter started taking notes while he waited to see if he was odd man out or not.

"Hey, Walter," Peter said. "Still need a partner?"

"Looks that way," Walter said, nodding. "Or I don't and now neither do you."

"That's probably the better way to look at it," Peter said. "Saves us both the trouble of looking around more. So, have any ideas on where to start with this?"

Walter tapped his pen on his notepad. "The unnamed kid who heard music and saw something? That's the closest thing to a witness. We'll need to figure out who it is. Maybe by coming at it from the other side - looking for the missing siblings to identify the one remaining."

"That's probably a good start," Peter said. "We could probably find school records to find any groups of siblings who've been absent recently. Or, since that would require careful trickery, gullible school office workers, and the assumption that this simulation has all of that worked out as well as a school, we could probably just talk to some locals. They always seem open to talking about strange stuff."

"It's a start," Walter said, jotting down a few more notes. "I'm obviously not from anywhere near and people usually close their mouths to outsiders. I'll have to let you ask a lot of the questions. We can also check newspaper archives either in person, or with the internet if you can point me the right way."

"Not big with computers, I take it?" Peter said. "That's fine, the local paper should have a website and a halfway decent search feature. And I think I'm good to lead the interviews. If my questions start to get rambly and off-topic, though, I'll need you to steer me back on track. There's a good chance that kind of thing might happen."
