Cross Species Communications - Monday 11/27/2006

Student's handwavy recieved vocabulary lists for the language of Spiders last weekend. However, when they get into class, they do not see a spider at the front of the room with Mary. Instead, there is a (rather sheepish looking) swan.

"Good afternoon Children... Due to a rather unfortunate and tragic series of events we do not have a guest speaker to review the language of spiders. Instead, we have a swan to speak to today..."

The swan tries to look innocent.

"Swans are large water birds of the family Anatidae, which also includes geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. Our... Guest today is a Cygnus olor, which is a common temperate Eurasian species, often semi-domesticated. Descendants of domestic flocks are naturalized in the United States and elsewhere. Not all varieties of swan hold their necks in a curved position and display their folded wings with the feather's splayed, but our guest here and his close relatives do.

Now the language of Anatidae is quite different from that of Passeriformes as we discussed previously in the term. Knowing the language of one can help you communicate with the other as some of you have discovered. Sometimes, there are variations as a result of regional or species variations."

[[ooc: Please wait for OCD. OPEN!!! Students are expected to try and speak Starling to the Swan. FYI - Cygnus olor are mute. Hilarity ensues. Please mod your own game of charades with the Swan who's name is "Princess" (Yes, it's a male swan and yes, he hates his name) if you would like. If you don't my slooooooow play, let me know oocly. I spent 10 hours at Disneyland with Walter!Mun yesterday and I'm mildly braindead this morning.]]

Molly breathed a huge sigh of relief when Miss Poppins said they wouldn't be talking to a spider today. She had really had enough of talking to spiders for quite a while.

River looked at the swan. //Why did you eat the spider?// she asked in Starling.

Door frowns, for she sadly doesn't already speak Swan, and she's not all that great at Starling, though she's improved with study.

//Are you in want of foodness?// she asks, though, in Starling. After all, most spiders aren't very big.

Lana has an odd and somewhat frustrating handwavey 'conversation' with Princess.

Ugh...Starling again. At least Kaoru had been practicing.
//Hello there... Isn't it a little cold here for you?//

Molly smiled brightly at the swan. //You're very pretty,// she said. //Much prettier than a spider.//

Ranma is not afraid of spiders like most people. Of course fearing CATS sort of makes that point moot. //I've never heard a swan make any noise. How are you suposed to talk?//

Jude had actually been practising while he had been in Toronto. He was almost fluent in Pigeon now and was getting pretty good at Seagull. He stuck to Starling, though.

//Hey [familial term indicating one possesses the same mother.]//

Willow whose mun was low on brainpower as well tried talking to Princess and then ended up rather enjoying the game of charades.

Of course it was difficult when the two of them didn't watch all of the same movies or TV shows, but Willow felt that was part of the learning experience.

Cedric talks to Princess, stumbling over a few words but discussing such things as the weather and hobbies. And the game of charades proved that Cedric was entirely too lanky and gangly for his own good.

Stark nodded to the swan before offering a greeting in Starling.

//Hello! I'm// "Stark."
He didn't have any commentary on the eating of spiders, so he decided just to stick with general pleasantries. //Good to meet you.//

"So like Cho." Luna said, mostly to herself.

//Hello, Princess. How does this day find you?//
