She wore her favorite suit to class today, and was standing at the front of the classroom as the students entered. Her arms were folded across her chest, one elbow propped upward, a cup of coffee held not unlike the torch on the Statue of Liberty. Well, except not that high -- maybe about shoulder-level. She waited for class to begin with a mischievous gleam in her eye.

"If you'll come in and take your seats from last time," Roslin said, gesturing with her coffee cup, "we'll get started."

The bell rang to signify the beginning of class, and she continued. "Last week we did budget submissions and got to know the fellow inmates in our cells." Her lips twisted into a lopsided grin. "Today, we get down to business. Your scenario is this: To this point, the United States, nor the Kingdom of Manticore have never heard of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. Yet, after the last Cylon war ended badly, ships full of refugees have shown up in the solar systems nearby. You now have a first contact situation on your hands -- compounded by the fact that these Colonists have no other place to go."

It wasn't the best scenario she could come up with, she reasoned, but it was at least a timely one, and one very pertinent to her time on Earth. Now let's hope neither one shoots first and asks questions later...

"As I mentioned last week, I'll be circulating, filling in for those roles we can't cast. I'll also be giving you little bits of information. They may or may not be true. It's up to you to figure that out -- pry it out of your adversaries, if necessary -- and decide whether or not to act on it." She glanced at her watch. "You have one hour starting... now."

Laura then began to make her rounds through the classroom. She also began wishing she'd ordered the venti instead of the grande.

Anders scribbled a few notes and ideas down in his notebook as he waited, looking more than a little disturbed. Which, he tried to tell himself, was stupid -- this was all theoretical.

"Any good ideas, oh Military?" Cally asked.

Anders couldn't quite bite back a sarcastic reply. "Are you sitting down? Good. Because I do, actually, and I wouldn't want you to faint from the shock."

"...shock?" Cally was a bit confused by the hostility, here.

Yeah, maybe Anders was jumping to conclusions a little bit since he'd only been able to deduce (and okay, assume) stuff based on what Bel had said to him. At the moment, that probably only made him more pissy.

"Yeah, shock. Of me maybe actually having some good ideas. Hell, they might even be smart ideas. Because, of course, that never happens, so I can see how it might be kind of terrifying."

"Did someone put pepper in your boxers this morning or something?" Cally asked. "You seem kinda mad about something."

"Oh, you think?" Anders growled, rolling his eyes.

"Okay, I'm sorry, but you don't need to bite my head off. It's not like I said anything to hurt you," Cally said.

"Maybe not to me, and maybe that wasn't what you intended, but that's what happened," Anders said tersely. "Whatever. I'm not talking about it now."

"Well, you aren't talking about it now anyways. You're being all vague and mean and trying to guilt me when I have no clue what you're talking about."

Anders shrugged and turned away briefly to ball up a piece of notebook paper and shoot it at the wastebasket. "Later. Maybe. For now we gotta figure out how to keep people from blowing us to pieces just for showing up in their solar system."

"Big white flags and saying we come in peace sounds good to me," Cally said.

"But we gotta have a plan," Anders replied, his tone still somewhat grudging. "In case they don't go for that. Damn, I wish I'd budgeted a little bit more for defense."

"Hey, like anyone could anticipate the frakking Cylons coming back?" Cally said. "Please. It's not like we've been launching missions past the armistice line to try and spy on them."

Anders snorted. "Yeah, right. There's, uh . . . no sign of them even thinking about coming back in your time, is there?"

"No way," Cally said. "They've still been totally quiet."

"Maybe they all, like, got a computer virus and . . . nah."

"Virus taking out the Cylons," Cally laughed. "Not that's a good one."

"Could happen," Anders mumbled. "It's about as likely as me trying to take out whole bases of them with four other people, but still."

Lead a group of people to another galaxy and make contact?

Elizabeth hid a smile as she flipped through her binder.

"At least I know one of us is cut out for this," Anders told her, with more warmth to spare than he had for Cally on this particular day. "At least, if the lack of panic on your face is any indication."

Elizabeth grinned across at him. "Never let a calm look fool you," she said. "Often a lack of panic is someone hiding their panic better."

"I'll keep that in mind," Anders told her. "So it's the people who aren't panicking I should be looking out for the most, right?"

"If someone is truly not panicked in a situation where panic is warranted, then they're an idiot and they definitely need looking out for," she said. "A little panic's always a good thing. It's like fear; reminds us that we're mortal."
