Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai was sitting on top of her desk when the class entered. Students would notice listening stations around the room.

"Today we're going to learn about popular music," Lorelai began. "In my personal opinion, most of what they call music today sucks. But I'll let you all make up your own minds. The listening stations are set up to play Billboard's Top 100 Singles."

Right before the end of class, Lorelai called for attention. "We're rapidly approaching the end of the semester. Don't forget about your final projects. Each of you will need to give a presentation to your classmates about a form of popular culture from your time or place. If you have questions, let me know."

Zuko didn't need to listen to the music to know that it sucked. He was glad at least Lorelai seemed to realise it too.

Gwynn agreed with both Zuko and Ms. Lorelai.

Marty wondered if hips could really lie or not. And if they could lie? What would they lie about?

Crappy music did nothing to help Bel's crappy mood. He scowled, thinking of the final project. His kind of "popular culture" wasn't something to be shared with the class.

If Marty was occasionally glancing a Bel from time to time? It was mostly in a low profile kind of way. Really.

Bel thought he caught Marty looking over at him, but dismissed it. He didn't know anything, so why would he be watching him?

Cedric listened to the music while, at the same time, thinking of what form of pop culture he'd present from his time and place.

If Joxer was in his own time, he probably would have just invented headbanging.

Given that the man invents the beer hat, this isn't all that far-fetched.

Mac is perfectly happy to sit and listen to music. She might even be swaying a little.

While she's listening she's also brainstorming ideas for a final project and deciding if she can talk about the crazy Bitterwoman fans on the internet and call it popular culture or not.

Kaylee listened to the music and liked it. She preferred 80s music, though.

She was also thinking about the final project.

Stark's not terribly impressed with the music, but finds himself humming along anyway. If nothing else, it was catchy.

Pete listened, bopping his head to one side in time to the music like those doofuses in the Roxbury sketches. As the music continues, he starts to get more into it, eventually rockin' out with his air banjo.

Briar couldn't make up his mind about the music so he just listened. Interesting how listening looked a lot like napping.

Evie was familiar with some of the music, thanks to Jake, and found the rest of it too confusing to follow. Shakira's dancing was familiar, although she'd definitely adapted those belly-dance moves.
