Journalism Class - Wednesday September 21

All the newsfeeds are on this morning, a different talking head on every wall and a few floating in the air around the classroom. Spider, however, appears to be paying attention to none of it, focus instead riveted on the somewhat complicated game he's playing with two small furry dice and the cat as they both sit atop his desk.

He's wearing an enormous, pointed clown hat and a pair of floppy shoes along with the rest of his normal ensemble and doesn't seem to find anything strange about it.

Once there is a decent-sized group of people in the classroom, Spider mutes the screens. Lighting two cigarettes, one for himself and one for the cat, he gets down to business.

"All right class. Today we're going to learn the value of asking the right questions. You can ask me any two questions about myself and then I want you to sum up what you learned into a single, succinct statement that you could use as a tag-line if you needed to refer to me in an article, say, if you quoted me on something. Something like...." He pursed his lips in thought. "'Stay Froody!' was the final exhortation of this extremely far out alien, wanting to encourage you to do well with your studies now that his career as instellar politician is at an end."

He grinned nastily, "You know, the sort of insipid tag line that the newsies use at the end of their interviews to make sure you've been paying attention. So. Two questions, and use them to construct any ending tag line you like that you feel sums me up. Extra-credit, as always, which can be used toward weaseling out of future homework. You may begin at any time."

Jake leaned back and eyed the Professor suspiciously (as usual). Any two questions, huh? This would need thinking about, since 'why are you a sadistic bastard' would probably give him an amusing but comepletly useless answer.

"All right," Jake said finally after much ponderind loning gazes towards t he cappuchino machine. "1) What exactly did you do before coming here? Feel free to not answer if the answer will traumatize me for life. And 2) Why the get-up today?"

Sliding into the seat next to Jake, Krycek waited for him to be done with his questions and then leaned into the aisle to speak quietly. "Hey. Meet me at The Perkolator after class." Curtailing any sort of argument or questioning, he continued with, "I'll buy."

Phoebe grins wickedly as she looks from Spider to Gavin.

"1) If there was one thing you could change about your current situation at Fandom High, what would you do?"

"2) What's up with your constant feline companion since you don't seem to like him very much?"

"One thing?" Spider raised his eyebrows. "I would have a constant entourage of the most beautiful and exotic whores, a much larger paycheck and a direct spy feed into the offices of the current President."

He looked down to where he was absently stroking the cat beneath both her chins. For her part, she was taking advantage of his distraction to hook out a paw and help herself to his cigarettes. "The cat? She eats gekos... and she's not afraid of making her opinions known. Plus," retreiving the pack and holding it out of her reach, "she always remembers where I left my cigarettes."

"The cat was on my doorstep when I moved back to the city, chain-smoking and starving to death." He batted at the cat as it tried again for his cigarettes. "They're genetically engineered to take care of the geko problem and you don't find a lot of them running loose."

The second question gave him momentary pause and he looked over the top of his glasses at her. "I don't think there's any such thing as a 'typical' day at Fandom High, but mine generally involves a great deal of caffiene, some perfectly legal stimulants and a lot of swearing."

Armed with a huge cup of coffee and still a little red around the eyes, Angela drops in on journalism class. Her two questions for Jerusalem are:

1. What's the biggest thing you have ever forgiven someone for?
2. How do you feel about students' attempts to get the weapons ban overturned?

Reminded by the presence of coffee that there was a cappucino machine within easy reach, Spider handed his cigarette butt to the cat and went to find some caffiene of his own. As he waited for the machine to finish, he answered her question. "The biggest thing? That's a very hard question. Forgiving Royce for his siccing my goddamn assistants on my ranks very high up there, however."

Collecting his drink, Spider wandered back to his desk. "As to the other, I wish them all the luck in the world."

Rogue steps into class looking decidedly dishevled, but not unhappy. She looks up at the assignment and thinks for a moment.

"Who, in your opinion is the most dangerous student in this school, and where did you get your name?"

"I don't know all the students," Spider told her, shaking his head. "I'd have to say that I've discovered that it pays to watch the quiet ones, however. As to my name...?" He shook his head sadly. "I had parents, just like everyone else."

Rory timidly raises a hand.

"What was your major, and why did you decide to go into teaching?"

"I've always been a Journalist," Spider told her, smile edged. "I'm here because it was four years of teaching high school or having to put out two books with my name on them that were nothing but dictation from a corrupt government... and no one tells me what to write."

Mac looked at Prof Jerusalem for a moment, thinking, "Okay, what's up with your sunglasses and what sort of relationship do you have with the tentacle monster in the basement?"

"They're not sunglasses," Spider corrected her, expression mildly indignant. "They're live shades... cameras for still photography, keyed to my optic nerves. They have a two gig memory and... I'll have to admit, they do look a bit eccentric."

He went to get himself more coffee, talking as he moved. "The tentacle monster was an unwelcome trespasser into my shower at a time when it was occupied. We have since reached an uneasy detente."

Duce thinks about this for a long, looooong time. There are so many things she'd love to have the Professor answer, but most of them were completely inappropriate to this class. Things such as 'why is there sometimes the muffled sound of singing emanating from the front of your pants' and 'why does the cat insist on marking all failing papers with streams of liquid shit'. Ok, so the second was really a question for the cat. Duce was not asking the cat a damned thing. It might answer her, and she was perfectly happy being ignorant to whether the cat had the means to speak.

Coming up with two she felt were fairly non-evasive, she queried,
"What meanings, if any, are there behind the symbolism of your tattoos?"

"Do your glasses signify or correct colourblindness?"

Spider blinked at her, looking over the top of his glasses. "Every picture is a story, Medusa. Each one came about for a specific reason at a specific time. Maybe at some point I'll discuss them, but it would be a very long discussion. The glasses," he grimaced, "the glasses are a manufacturing error. I liked them, I kept them."

"Yes, to the first, much as it pains me to admit it." Spider's look was grim. "Yes also to the second, but only from a certain perspective. Everyone has some sense of 'normal'. It's how we, as a race, remain sane. No offense, Delerium."

Xander nurses a styro-cup of really, really, really bad cafeteria coffee, and wonders, not for the first time, if risking the espresso machine might not be such a dangerus idea, comparatively speaking.

"Surviving Fandom High? I'd say always having a clear escape route, an alternate plan and a good pair of running shoes would help. Fairy godparents of some kind, perhaps, or the favor of a god." Spider sipped his coffee as he considered the second question. "Don't spread lies."

"Proudest moment? Realizing that my Filthy Assistants are almost as nasty as I am." Spider grinned at her. "Good and bad are convenient labels to justify opposing behavior types when held against a 'normal' standard. Me, I defy description."
