Fencing Club: Salle, 5pm

Peter was looking perhaps a bit under the weather, but he was in the salle and setting up at 5pm because wild horses couldn't have prevented it.  He nodded at the other students.  "Good afternoon, all.  I don't actually have much to say so go to it.  Pair up or not, and so make sure to stretch out first."

"Well... pigeon," Willow said. "To be fair, grammar can be hard enough on the humans, let alone birds."

Door shakes her head. "No, I mean Pigeon grammar. It's a robot, and its language file is...interesting."

"Robot pigeon!?" Willow asked, delighted. "Has she met Bridge's robot dog?"

"Probably? Bridge built her. I don't if he formally introduced them, but it would seem like the polite thing to do."

"Oh," Willow said. Her shoulders slumped. "I thought you came pre-pigeoned. I didn't realize he'd made her for you."

"She doesn't actually do anything robotish like Bridge's dog that she totally handwavily met," Door tells her. "She just carries messages and acts like a pigeon."

"That's still good," Willow said. "I don't have any pets, robot or otherwise. Well right now I have fruit flies but we don't have that kind of relationship."

"Mine's not really meant to be a pet," Door admits. "But it's hard not to treat her like one." She raises an eyebrow at the fruit flies. "Do you, er, need help getting rid of the flies? I think they make a sort of sticky tape for that..."

"Oh, no thank you," Willow said. "I'm breeding them for an experiment."

"Really? Are you trying to grow bigger, better fruit flies?"

"I'm trying to determine if alcohol influences them to make poor decisions about their partners," Willow said.

Door snorts. "If they're anything like humans?"

Willow grinned. "Exactly! They'll go from survival of the fittest to waking up in the morning and writing really embarrassing entries in their diaries."

"Do you think fruit flies keep diaries?" Door says curiously. "They'd have to be quite small. Wee, even."

"But that's not an indicator of quality," Willow pointed out.

"True. Though they might be difficult to read, if you're planning on using that as your evidence of poor relationship choices."

"I could use a magnifiying glass!" Willow said, always happy for an excuse to do that.

"The flies might notice the giant eye staring at them and hide their diaries. You'd have to be very quiet."

"Good point," Willow said. "Maybe dim the lights a little too."

"Might make it hard to read. Less likely to accidentally set the flies and their diaries on fire, though."

"I'm used to reading in the dark," Willow said. "I had to do it all the time when my mom took my flashlight away."

Door frowns. "Aren't flash lights like little lanterns that run on batteries? Why would you be trying to read by one of those instead of just turning on the electric lights?"

It occurs to her only after asking that perhaps not all people who grew up in the Upworld had electricity, but since it was Willow who introduced her to the concept of electric blankets, she's assuming that's not the case here.

"Because bedtime means sleeping and lights out, young lady," Willow replied. "So I'd use a flashlight and hide under my blanket."

"Ahhhh!" Door smiles. "My mother didn't bother; after years of failing to pry my father out of his study when he was reading, I think she decided she was better off saving herself the headache."
