Coffee, donuts and juice were set on a table at the front of the class, and Elliot handed out the lab as the students walked in.

"Hey, guys. Today we're going to learn about blood types, which is kind of like DNA but with training wheels on, in that they used to be used for identification back in the dark ages before we had DNA testing. Or, you know, 15 years ago.

"In the human population, there are four major blood types -- O, A, B and AB, and then each can be Rh-negative or Rh positive. In a typical human population, roughly a third each will be A positive and O positive, and the other six groups will split the final third."

Elliot continued with her lecture, explaining antigens, transfusions, and other factors relating to blood type.

"Two activities today, one serious -- well, graded, anyhow -- and one completely goofy. First, I want you to pair up and do one of the activities in your lab handouts. It's your choice whether you do the one with the baby or the one with the murder.

Second, if you have time I want you to look at this handout about the Japanese blood type theory of personality and see how it applies to yourself. There's a test on the bench that will let you type your own blood if you don't know. Like, I'm AB, which makes me, 'Cool, controlled, rational. Sociable and popular. Empathic.' Huh.

"That's it for today, so please get to work."

Willow? So doing the murder. She got her materials ready.

"Hey Will," Jamie said with a little wave. "Got a partner?"

"Not yet," Willow said. "Wanna solve a murder with me?"

"Sure," Jamie said looking over the lab. "Actually the older version of me is a private detective so this should be a cinch."

Jamie read the lab and nodded. "Okay. I say the butler did it."

Willow nodded her agreement. "Also? I think he was a vampire. Though I don't know offhand how many vampires buttle."

"Well I don't think many do," Jamie replied. "They all have to be polite if their butlers and no one would allow them to bite their guests. Unless of course the host is the vampire then... Oh that's just a cheezy thought."

"What if it was the janitor who was the vampire?" Willow asked. "He works at night, he found the body - sounds suspicious if you ask me."

"Let's test out the bloodwork," Jamie replied. "Then we'll tie the janitor to the ground and force feed him garlic."

"Can we use magnifying glasses while we do it?" Willow asked. "I feel all good mysteries should have magnifying glasses."

"Magnifying glasses work," Jamie replied. "So does that make you Sherlock? And I'm Dr. Watson?"

Willow bounced with excitement. "Oo! We could make those hats out of paper!"

"Thing Dr. Ried would care?" Jamie said picking up some appropriately head-sized pieces of paper. "Also how do you fold it? I always end up with a wad of paper on my head."

Willow pulled out her laptop and quickly Googled it. "Okay, I think we can manage it if we follow these instructions. Otherwise? Stapler and duct tape and we swear not to tell anyone we didn't do proper origami."

Jamie looked over Willow's shoulder and started making the hat. "You know this really should be part of the lab instructions. Oh! You want to test the first suspect?"

"We probably should," Willow agreed. "Oh! When the time comes, can I do the interrogating? I'm very good at it."

"Can we play good cop/bad cop?" Jamie said finishing up his hat (which looked more like a crumpled up piece of paper than a hat). "We did that before! Remember? The forces of evil would crumble before us."

"Ooh, yes!" Willow said. She held her in-progress hat like she was shaking someone by the shoulders. "Talk or I'll spell you so hard you'll be singing soprano!"

"I think the hat is very intimidated by you," Jamie whispered so the hat couldn't here. Shh. It makes sense. Really.

"Is the hat the night janitor?" Willow whispered back, because she got this kind of logic.

"Yes, but we might get more answers from the Janitor than the hat. Unless the hat has blood on it we can then type."

Determined to get her interrogation in, Willow gave the hat another shake. "Where were you on the night of the fifth?"

"What did it say?" Jamie asked seriously.

"It's not talking," Willow said. "We may need to get... the eraser."

"Whoa now! Hold back there Will," Jamie said holding up his hands. "There's no reason to get rough. It's just a hat."

Willow pouted.
