Constant Vigilance 2, Session 9. Friday the 10th, A Classroom. Period 4

The Doctor was smiling as everyone piled into the classroom today.

"Hope everyone enjoyed their extra-long break from this class. Today we jump into something much bigger than just random alien races that you may never encounter. Today, we discuss the most important thing in the universe: friends. Nothing is really more important than having someone you can trust, someone you can rely on. I've had many such companions over the years. And instead of me talking about them..." the Doctor patted his holoprojector. "I'll have you talk to them, instead. That's the agenda for the day, nothing fancier than that. Talk with some of the people from my past, learn whatever you want from them."

He pressed the button for the projector to turn on, and several figures appeared.

"Go on, have at it. No homework for next week."

"Then you must find as much trouble as he does," Leela said, her tone disapproving. "I hope you are more skilled at eluding it, when it finds you! The Doctor runs toward it, most often."

Pippi tilted her head back and forth thoughtfully in an "Eh" kind of gesture.

"I would not run away if somebody needs help."

She didn't clarify if by "help", she meant "protect" or "taught a lesson".

"What made you decide to go with him when he left your world... Assuming you did."

For the first time, Leela looked uncertain. "I had found out that many things my people believed were true, were not. That our god was not a god, that our enemies were family, that the Evil One was just... the Doctor. I wished to learn more, see more. After he came to our land-- my world was too small, too simple." She shrugged, then, and put her hands on her hips. "A warrior of the Sevateem does not shrink from new dangers."

"...So you ran toward these new dangers?" Pippi asked grinning.

Leela opened her mouth, then scowled. "I ran toward new knowledge, and experience. Danger runs from me." She nodded defiantly, then added, "But prudence is always wise." She *almost* smiled at Pippi.

"What made you leave his company?"

"I met a man of his tribe with whom I wished to start a family, on his home planet, Gallifrey. My time of wandering was over, then. It pained me to leave the Doctor, but Andred and I were strongly bonded to each other. I knew the Doctor would be well, though I worried he would be hurt without me to protect him."

"He seems to be of the opinion that one should not travel alone, though I couldn't say if any of his other traveling companions did as good a job protecting him as you."

Leela inclined her head in respect. "I hope they did. He is very dear to me, although always strange. Even among his own kind, he was odd. But I thank you for the compliment."
