Constant Vigilance 2, Session 9. Friday the 10th, A Classroom. Period 4

The Doctor was smiling as everyone piled into the classroom today.

"Hope everyone enjoyed their extra-long break from this class. Today we jump into something much bigger than just random alien races that you may never encounter. Today, we discuss the most important thing in the universe: friends. Nothing is really more important than having someone you can trust, someone you can rely on. I've had many such companions over the years. And instead of me talking about them..." the Doctor patted his holoprojector. "I'll have you talk to them, instead. That's the agenda for the day, nothing fancier than that. Talk with some of the people from my past, learn whatever you want from them."

He pressed the button for the projector to turn on, and several figures appeared.

"Go on, have at it. No homework for next week."

Girl and knife. So maybe he did have a thing for girls who could kick his ass. "Yo," Cameron greeted cheerfully.

Leela cocked her head, and repeated, "Yo. Is this the greeting, among your tribe? Then yo. I am Leela of the Sevateem."

"Well, it's one of the greetings we use here on Earth," Cameron replied. "I'm not really from a tribe."

Then he remembered his manners. "I'm Cameron Mitchell," he said, holding out his hand.

Leela looked dubious, then held out her hand to grasp his wrist, and looked startled when hers passed through his. "What magic is this? More tricks? Are you a magician, like the Doctor?"

Meep. Apparently the projector didn't work like Danger Shop. Oops.

Cameron quickly snatched his hand back. "Uh... No. Sorry, it's er..." Shit. "My species isn't always as solid." Smooth, Mitchell.

Leela cocked her head, studying him, and said, "That must be very inconvenient for you. My people are always so. It makes killing things easier, when you can hit them and make them bleed. But not always." She scowled. "Some things are much harder to kill."

"Yeah, it's a real drag," Cameron nodded, prefering this to having to explain to someone that they weren't real.

Then he registered that she was talking about killing people. "You don't happen to know anyone by the name of Callisto, do you?"

"I do not. Is she a warrior as well?" Leela cocked her head, looking interested. "And are you a warrior, or a scholar? Or a magician, like the Doctor? You do not appear to be a robot."

"She is. She just likes knives and such," he shrugged. "I'm uh... I'm not anything just yet. I'm a student, but I want to be fighter pilot after this."

Leela focused on the words she understood, and nodded approval. "A student of fighting. Do you intend to stay to protect your people? Or to go out and explore your world? Both paths have honor and glory to them."

"I'm going to join the Air Force," Cameron replied. "They're part of our military. They'll decide for me where I'm most needed."

"Your tribe does both?" Leela nodded approval. "How came you to know the Doctor?"

"I'm one of his students," Cameron replied. "How about you?"

"He came to my land, and dispelled an evil myth. And helped make peace between my tribe, the Sevateem, and the Tesh. When the conflict was over, I joined him to learn more of the world beyond my home." Leela smiled. "We visited here, once. Have you been to the place called London?"

Re: Companion Projections.

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-11-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Cameron shook his head. "No, it's a bit away from here. I wouldn't mind going, though."

"The Cockney tribe are good fighters, but beware those who try to serve you tea," Leela said very seriously. "It is a trap. They speak in riddles, and then do not give you as much sugar as you request. We fought and evil sorceror there, and saved many lives. But I was not sorry to leave. There should always be open spaces in which to hunt, and London has very few."

"Yeah, big cities then to be pretty crowded," he said with a note of amusement. "And people say that English is a whole different language so..."

Re: Companion Projections.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-11-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Leela shook her head. "Madness. The Doctor calls me a savage, but I would not become 'civilized' if it meant living as your people do. Too many too close-- how can you know who is sharing your hunting ground? Or if they are trustworthy? It is one thing to wander, it is another to live among strangers and call it home."

"For one thing, we don't have to hunt for our food so it does help. Unless you call shopping hunting, which I think that some girls actually might do, but that's beside the point," he rambled on, but quickly came back to the point. "We still have our own space to live, it's just closer to other people. I kind of like it. I suck at being on my own."

Re: Companion Projections.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-11-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Leela frowned, and nodded. "Companions are of greatest importance. But the crowds-- I shall never understand that." She shrugged philosophically. "But it is well. Neither is better. I prefer my own, but my people would not build cities like that, or weapons that could protect it. I depend on what I can see, and touch, and hit. But I know there are other ways."

Re: Companion Projections.

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-11-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like you've had a bit of a culture shock following the Doctor around," Cameron remarked.

"There are far more rules in other places, than at my home. The proper manner of speaking. Of eating. Of dressing." She gestured to her furs. "What is improper in this attire? If I am cold, I will obtain more furs. If not, it allows movement and protection. What more is needed?"

"Some animal lovers might take offence, but for the most part I think people will put survival above that," he replied.
