"Good morning," said V, folding his hands behind his back as students filed in. "Today is a class to which I have been looking forward for some time. Every crimefighter needs to know, specifically, what tools are at their disposal."

He rounded on the class. "Do any of you have a specific weapon you prefer? Or do you rely on wits, or your own strength? Couple this with the clothing you designed some time back. Do they coordinate? What is the reasoning behind each tool?"

He began to pace. "Furthermore, there are the tools used not in battle, but planning. Books. Maps. Technology, I suppose. What do you use to track a criminal, to succeed in the least amount of time?"

He paused, and quirked his head at the class. "This, dear class, is the lead into your final project, which will be worked upon for the remainder of the term. Please pair up. Don't automatically choose your best friend. This person will be your ally for the rest of the semester. They will be your partner, your backup - your other half, as far as this class is concerned. Today your goal is to take your various tools and resources, and see where you are lacking and where you are overdone. What can each of you bring to the partnership, and where do you need to improve?"

He clasped his hands in front of himself. "Simply form an alliance with another person in class, and bring your thoughts on crime-solving together. All right?"

"Then we're on the same page," Teddy replied. "Got any unique skills to fight crime with?"

"I'm pretty good with guns, explosives and strategy. No natural talents, all learned. No mutants where I come from that I know of."

Teddy eyes widened. "Guns?"

"Yeah. Not a gun guy?"

Teddy shook his head. "Not really, no. More of a hand-to-hand fighting kind of guy."

"I can do that too. I'm out of practice, but I can hold my own. We could tag team. All the superhero duos do it, right?"

Teddy nodded encouragingly. "Sounds likes a plan to me. Oo! And we need names."

"Major K! is mine. With an exclamation mark. I kinda tried out to be The Tick's sidekick last year and the name stuck." He grinned sheepishly.

Teddy stared, and tried to think of something nice to say. "I like the exclaimation point. Very edgy."

"It needs work. How about you?"

"I don't really have one for here," Teddy replied. "I could follow suit with you and be Captain M."

"For here? You got one for somewhere else?"

Teddy ducked down in his seat. "Uh, yeah. Kinda."

"Cool. You solo or got a team? Just, another friend of mine sorta has a thing back home with a crime-fighting team. Sounds pretty cool."

"A team, actually," Teddy replied, feeling less like he destroyed any chance of a secret identity. "Which is a plus for you, I guess, since I know how to work with people doing this."

He grinned. "Well, anything that's a plus for me has to be good. I'm a team guy too. I was military in a...well, past life I guess you could call it. I like working with people. It's good to have someone to watch your back and who knows what you've been through."

Teddy looked wary. "Military?"

Between the gun thing and the military thing, Kawalsky was clued into the fact that Teddy was a little wary of the whole thing. Maybe he'd had a bad experience. Wasn't his place to ask. "Ex-military. Past life. Long time ago. It was good. I learned a lot of stuff, got to travel and made a lot of pals I could trust. Different life now though."

"Okay," Teddy replied, willing to take Kawalsky's word on it. "So, um, should we come up with a team name?"

"Sure. What do they call teams where you're from?"

"Well, my team got named by a newspaper. And most of the others are paramilitary or start with an X."

"Like X-Squad?"

"Yeah, pretty much anything with an X in front of it works."

"Well hey, if it works, why change? X-Squad, X-Team, X-Force, X-Battalion, X-Unit, X...whatever."

"Not X-Force," Teddy replied. "That one's already been taken. I'm liking X-Unit though."
