Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Lab Eight

Today the room is arranged so that a movie screen hanging on the wall is easily viewable from all the chairs. In addition to the usual scones, cookies and muffins, there is also popcorn and gummi worms.

"Today we're going to have a brief lecture, followed by a movie. No homework, since you have no classes next week. I hope you all enjoy your break."

"I'll have you know cranberries are very good for you," Anders informed her in a voice much more solemn than the facial expression that went with it. "And hey, sure, if you don't want it."

"I know that, but blech," she made a face and handed over the muffin.

Anders took the muffin and made a show of biting into it. "Blech nothing," he said around a mouthful of cranberry and crumbs. "But if you don't like 'em, more for me!"

Dawn grinned. "So you're the cranberry muffin king? Or is that an elected spot?"

Anders made a show of looking mildly offended, but couldn't hold the expression for long and dissolved into a snicker. "No, I'm the cupcake king. I think you have to win a gladiatorial sort of tournament to earn the cranberry muffin title."

Dawn cracked up. "Cupcakes, huh? Favorite flavor?"

"Chocolate. With chocolate icing. Is it even a competition?" asked Anders. "I mean, come on, chocolate!"

"Have you tried them with peanut butter icing?" Dawn asked, "and with chocolate chips on top?"

Anders looked like he'd just had an earthshaking revelation. "No, but I think I know what I'm doing this weekend, now. That sounds frakking awesome."

"Save one for me?" Dawn asked with a grin. "Frakking? That's one I haven't heard before, and I got my education in swears from a snarky British vampire, so that's saying something."

"Snarky British vampire?" asked Anders, mildly interested. "If your swearing education hasn't covered other planets yet, you might want to look into adding 'em to the curriculum."

"Ooooh," Dawn looked very intrigued by that idea, "and yeah. Spike was an amazing guy, but very into British slang, explaining how he was still evil, and complaining about how Billy Idol stole his look."

It was a shame that Anders's Earth pop culture references didn't include Billy Idol, because that would have explained so much. Instead, because Eddie Izzard was his main reference point for British culture, he was picturing Spike as much more of an executive transvestite. Except maybe an evil one.

"Was he? Really still evil?"

It was too bad that Dawn didn't know Eddie Izzard at all, or she might have hurt herself laughing at the description.

"Um," Dawn hesitated, then said, "Sometimes? There was a lot of crazy mixed in towards the end."

Anders picked a cranberry out of the muffin and popped it into his mouth. "Alternative lifestyle kind of crazy or institution crazy?"

"Um...he gave up eating people, but lived in a high school basement and talked to himself." Dawn tucked some hair behind her ear. "How do you score that?"

Now that was a conundrum Anders had to put down his muffin for, and think about with his chin propped up on both hands. "I'm going with whatever the coinflip says," he decided finally.

"A wise decision," Dawn decided. "Gotta coin?"

Anders pulled a quarter out of his pocket. "Whaddya say? Heads, alternative lifestyle, tails, institution?"

"Sounds good." She waited for the flip.

Anders flipped the coin pretty high into the air and made a flashy grab for it. In the darkened classroom, this only resulted in him swatting the quarter straight down into a crack in his chair.

Yep, wedged in on its edge.

"Well, that didn't help."

Dawn started giggling. "Actually, that's the best answer you could have gotten."

"He sounds like a cool guy, then," Anders decided. It took several seconds of concentrated effort to tug the quarter loose, and he eyed it thoughtfully before tucking it back into his pocket. "In a complicated kind of way."

Dawn decided that might be the best description she ever heard of Spike. "He was definitely that."

Anders noticed the verb tense. "Was?" he asked hesitantly.
