Monday, October 16, First Period

In addition to the usual comfy chairs and breakfast spread, there are several stacks of books scattered about the room.

"Good morning. Today we're going to do something a little different. I know that lately, you've had to deal with some rather difficult topics in this class. Prophecy isn't an easy subject, and that's especially true for those of you who've already had first-hand experience with it. So today, I want you to take some time to decompress. Work with your project group if you like, catch up on some reading-" He nodded toward the books. "Or just talk quietly with your friends. I'll be here all period for anything that you'd like to discuss with me, any questions you might have about the class, or anything else. There are handouts for you that cover the class topics for today. Those of you enrolled in the lab will find some of this material familiar, but there's more in-depth information here for you.

Also, I'll need to speak with Miss Belacqua, Miss Brown, and Miss Nitt before the end of class today."

Homework: Look up the astrological chart for your date of birth. Write out a simple description of what it says about your personality, and note any differences of opinion between your own perception of yourself and what the chart says." [ooc: You only need to enter information for date/time/place to get a reading. Make up something for the time unless your canon is OCD enough to provide it for you.]

A Note on Group Projects: The first stage of class projects is due November 13. Remember, this is the part where you write your own prophecy. Once the projects are turned in, I will assign them to another group to be interpreted.

"Mr. Phale?" Nadia was looking over the homework with concern. "I can't do the homework assignment."

Aziraphale figured immediately that he knew why. It was a possibility he'd considered when making the assignment, and wondered if any of his students would have this problem.

"You can't answer the questions necessary for the chart?" he guessed. "It's quite all right, my dear. How about finding a friend to do the chart for, and then assessing what you see about their personality versus what the chart says?"

Nadia nodded. "Okay. I can do that, I guess."

"Thank you, Miss Santos. I think you might find it an entertaining exercise."

Bridge raises his hand.

"Yes, Mr Carson?"

"I'm not entirely sure I can do the homework," Bridge admits. "I mean, there's this whole big thing with the day I was born actually being the day before I was born..."

Okay...well, Aziraphale knew that his students weren't your typical lot.

"Er...I think, unless you feel that it's just not feasible, you could choose one or the other. I mean, it really is more of a light-hearted exercise, and isn't meant to provoke any prophetic interpretations. But if you really feel that you can't do one for yourself, find a friend and do a chart for them instead."

Lyra walked up to her professor, looking absolutely mortified.

"Miss Belacqua, I just need an excuse for your absences last week ~~because my mun can't remember if you mentioned it IC beforeheand~~."

Lyra hung her head.

"I don't actually have one, sir," she nearly whispered. "I was wondering if you would help me with it, though. I fell asleep the night after Homecoming, and woke up this morning. I think something might be wrong with me."

[ooc: I mentioned it in passing ooc, but not ic.]

Sleeping through one's alarm was one thing, but sleeping away an entire week without knowing why was another thing entirely. Aziraphale frowned, a little worried about Lyra.

"Yes, of course, my dear. Although...if you think you might be ill, I'd suggest stopping by the clinic. The doctors here in Fandom are quite skilled. On the other hand, if you think the problem is something more...esoteric..." He patted Lyra's hand. "I'll do what I can to help."

"I will, sir, but I wondered if it mightn't have anything to do with, well, with magic." Lyra looked less uneasy, now that she was talking to someone with authority about it.

"It's happened once before. I was asleep for months, then. I never did find out what happened, but Mrs... my mother looked after me, that time. It's the only really kind thing I can remember her doing for me."

Lavender is chewing on her bottom lip and looking rather scared.

"Miss Brown, I need an excuse from you for your absence from last Monday's class."

"I'm really sorry Mr. Phale. I wasn't feeling well and I meant to only lie down for a minute but when I woke up it was late. And then I know I should have seen you during your office hours but I completely forgot. So really I don't have an excuse other than I've yet to learn how to set a muggle alarm clock, which ok, I realize isn't really an excuse at all and um I forgot?" Lavender says this all in one breath with many emphatic gestures.

~~I'm a total space cadet and lost track of the days, sorry.~~

Aziraphale nodded, and didn't look too terribly stern. "Well, I've let the other students who've experienced similar problems off with a warning for their first time. But in future I'll need either a written excuse showing that you visited the clinic, or at least a visit in person to my office hours to discuss your absence. Also, we had a test on Monday, so I'll need you to come by my office hours this week and take the test."

Dawn raised her hand, hoping she could talk to Professor Aziraphale about the homework somewhere a little more private.

Aziraphale nodded at Dawn and smiled. "Yes, Miss Summers?"

Dawn got up to talk to the professor, and leaned over and said quietly, "I have a problem with the homework. I can't do it."

Nodding again, Aziraphale spoke very softly, so that only Dawn could hear. "You aren't the only one with that problem, I fear. Do you think you might be able to find a friend who would allow you to do a chart for them instead?"

Agnes waited for a good opportunity before approaching. She still had a faint rash of squares visible on her face and hands.

"Good morning, Miss Nitt," Aziraphale said, his welcoming smile fading into a slight frown of concern as he eyed the rash. "I suspect you're going to tell me you've been ill?"

She rather hoped that the rising blush would block the squares from visibility.

"Yes. It's getting better, though."
