A minute or two after class is supposed to start, Jesse strolls in with his coffee mug in hand.

Without preamble, he begins his lecture. "Okay, let's get this party started. Since I missed last week - long story, you don't wanna know - we're gonna talk about Judaism and Islam together today, and next week we'll roll in Christianity to look at the three religions most people think of when they think of People of the Book."

From there he continued with a discussion of the Pentateuch and its relation to the Torah, and the Qu'ran and Islam's original kinship to both Judaism and Christianity.

"Okay, so where people seem to fu- screw things up is lookin' at the things that make us different instead of the things we got in common. With what I've told you here today, you should be able to see that just because Jews and Muslims are havin' a high old time killin' each other in some parts of the world, don't mean they got nothing in common.

"Today I want you to take any of the religions we've covered so far, or hell, any religion you can find in that big old book over there, and come up with things they got in common. You wanna talk about how the tribes of Papua New Guinea and the Christians both have strong beliefs about witches, go to. You wanna talk about the history of religious war with both Hindus and Christians, it's all yours. Get together with a friend and have some fun with it. Everyone's got some nutty ideas about God. Might as well see where they intersect."
