*Why no, the science teacher isn't following a set theme. And this should make the students who were complaining about no chemistry much happier.*

Today, we will be discussing the chemicals one would find in a cell. If you would open your notes to page 24. And don't forget to sign the roll sheet--two consecutive absences will earn you detention. I will post lists later on this week.

Reductionism is an assumption that underlies much of contemporary science. The central premise: To understand a complex system, break the system down into its parts. This has been a very successful program for many areas of biology (though not for all). It can, if applied overly dogmatically, lead to an overly mechanical view of the cell. But it is a useful approach, and one that generates an extraordinary volume of research.
* Hierarchic view of life: to understand life fully, need to study it at different levels
* The cell is a chemical machine; its parts and its language are chemical
* Need sophisticated tools to analyze the components: chromatography,electrophoresis, etc.
* Biochemistry is study of these parts

*looking at Sara, breathing slower now* N-nothing Ms. Sidle I-I just dropped my books, I'm sorry. *Maia looks at Sara her eyes pleading* I'm sorry I dropped them.

*Doesn't press the issue.* Calm down, it's all right.

*swallows hard and nods* Yeah, yeah it is. *Picking back up her notebook she begins to write down notes again fuming at herself for loosing control like that. "she'll think your insane. she'll not want to come around you again if you act this way" Maia stares down at her paper, trying to keep her hand steady and keep her tears from falling as she finishing labeling parts of the cell.

*on her way past, she lowers her voice* If you need to see me after class, you can. *is concerned*

*Maia nods still fighting back tears* Yeah, thanks *whispers, her voice cracks, hands still shaking Maia puts down her pen and stares down at her cell diagram feigning that she is memorizing it.*

*blinks*

*shrugs*

*grins*

*Maia does not return the smile. She studies Belthazors face for moment wondering if it is the same face that Phoebe saw when she loved him. Shaking the thought off Maia sits back in her seat slowly trying to look at Belthazor without him knowing it*

*catches Maia looking at him*
*grins slyly*

*Maia's breath catches* No *she couldnt help but smile back though he was cute* I- you look like someone I've seen before is all. Trying to place where I saw you at.

I don't think we've formally met before. I'm Belthazor.

*smiles, but there is something predatory-like about it*

*nods* I'm Maia *she does not extend a hand nor does she return the smile* And we havent, been formally introduced I mean. I've see you around campus though. I didnt realize you were in this class though.

*senses her fear and enjoys it*

Been here everyday. Hank over there is my lab partner.

Guess I just kinda blend in, that's why you haven't seen me.

*picks up some stray papers that Maia missed and is obviously concerned for her lab partner*

*jumps at Lana's words* Oh hey yeah. *takes the papers from Lana* Yeah, just, that guy back there *inclining her head towards Belthazor* he uh, he startled me a bit. Thanks *indicates the papers* Finish diagramming your cell yet? *trying to change the subject and avoids Lana's eyes*

Not quite. I'm having a little bit of trouble with it still. *Still looks concerned* Hey, is that guy bothering you? 'Cause you don't have to put up with that sort of thing from anyone!

She was the one staring at me, babe. I was just minding my own business here.

Excuse me. I was talking to my lab partner here and she looks a little shaken up. If she says you weren't bothering her, then fine. But I think she's able to speak for herself.

*Thinks this guy is too handsome for his own good. But can't quite keep herself from admiring a little either.*

*flashes best charming smile*

Sorry, with all the rumors floating around school and stuff, I just didn't want anyone to think I was a harasser of innocent young girls.

*Smiles back* Sorry if I was a little hasty there. I just, well, I've seen girls get harrassed before and some of them are too scared to say anything. Glad you're not that kind of guy. *smiles again*

*looks back at Belthazor* No, he's not bothering me. I thought he was someone else. *smiles* Thanks though, its nice to have friends around here. *smiles again* Do you need some help with it?

Oh good. *flashes Belhazor slightly chagrined smile* You just seemed so upset.

And yes, it *is* good to have friends. It can be a pretty lonely place here. I think if you could just explain this section here to me *points to part of diagram* then I should be okay. Thanks!
