Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 10/18, 3rd Period

The plasma screen in the computer lab is on and showing an episode of Galaxy Quest when the students enter. Abby waves from where she's eating popcorn and watching.

"Good morning! Today we're going to work on finding video's and music on the web." She launched into a description of Youtube, Google Video and iTunes.

"Those are the legal ways to view or get movies. The illegal ones are a lot more fun." Abby grinned. "There are communities and message boards set up where people offer up songs or videos to share. Or you can download a torrent for whatever you're looking for."

"Today you're going to be downloading peer to peer filesharing programs. My personal favorite is Limewire, but you're free to find one of your own. I want to see some illegal downloads before this class is over!"

Kawalsky had a hard time figuring out how to get the file-sharing program to work. Then he had a hard time finding anything. Once that was out of the way, he managed to start the download for Half-Life 2.

Ray's done this before. He tried Kazaa but warnings started popping up almost immediately so he went with Shareaza. And, after clicking on what he thought was an AC/DC song, he started the song and realized it was Celine Dion.

Damn mislabeled files.

"You're a Celine Dion fan?" Jamie asked looking a little surprised.

"Do I look like one?" Ray snapped and then calmed down. "No, this was supposed to be AC/DC. The file was mislabeled or something."

Mac already has filesharing down to a fine art. She has several programs, but she's actually busy downloading TV shows over IRC, because then you get to chat and share files all at the same time. Yay multitasking.

Pete was rather distracted trying to puzzle out the terminology of downloading and torrents, but perked right up when Abby mentioned the whole illegal part.

"Well, I'm gonna be a natural at this!"

He then proceeded to illegally download something. Several somethings. Mostly trojans, worms, and viruses.

But, hey, at least he got them illegally.

Evie flailed for quite a bit, since the word 'illegal' set off all her internal alarms, but finally, she couldn't stand it-- she started downloading the latest Strifenova Celestial using Bittorrent. "We won't get arrested?"
