When the students came into the Danger Room, they found John leaning against the by-now familiar black car, the mainstreet of a small town behind him.

"Good afternoon," John said when they all had arrived. "First an announcement. I won't be having office hours tomorrow as something has come up and I need to go out of town for the weekend. If you have anything you need to discuss, you can see me after class or wait until my office hours next Tuesday.

"As promised last week, behind me is the town of Hume. As the information you were given tells you, recently two teenage girls -- Ashley Taggart age 15 and Valerie Brown age 16 -- died under identical mysterious circumstances. They were found dead in the town's dance studio after having been practicing alone. There was no signs of violence on the bodies, according to the autopsies, their hearts just gave out.

"This is typical of the kind of information a hunt starts with. So let's see what you can make of it. Your assignment is to find out what killed those girls and stop it. You paired off last week so go to it." He smiled at them. "Impress me."

The man's expression became suitably sober. "Yes, such a tragedy. Ashley and Val were two of our very best students."

"They were in good health though, huh?" Bel said. "You sure they were alone in here, that no one else was with them?"

"They were both in excellent health. Aside from dancing here, Ashley was a cheerleader and Val ran track. You couldn't ask for two more physically fit girls. That's what so strange about this." His expression turned even more sad . "As far as I know they were here alone. Staying late to practice. They had the lead in our fall production, well Ashley first and then when she... Val was given the part. We've cancelled the production now, couldn't bear to go on with it. It just seems cursed."

A haunted look came into his eyes. "I was the one who found them, you know. Just... lying there in front of the mirror, like... puppets whose strings had been cut. Soaked in sweat, and their feet were bleeding." He gave a harsh bark of laughter, nothing humourous in the sound. "If I didn't know better, I'd say they'd danced themselves to death."

"Huh," Bel said. "If the show hadn't been cancelled, who would've taken the lead part now?"

"And what kind of show was it, sir?"

The man looked back and forth between them. "We never really got far enough... we probably would've had to have auditions... The show? It was an adaptation of some old fairy tale. An original production. It was really going to be something special." He sighed sadly.

That got Bel's interest. "Fairy tale? What fairy tale?"

Phoebe's interest was perked as well as she waited for the answer to their question.

"It's a bit more obscure than some." He smiled slightly. "Disney hasn't done a version of it. It's called the Red Shoes."

"What's it about?" Bel asked. "I'm not familiar with it at all."

"It's about a young girl who gets a pair of shoes that let her dance," the man explained. "The catch is she can't stop dancing when she's wearing them. Sort of a be careful what you wish for situation."

"Pick up a special pair of shoes for the part, huh?" Bel said.

The man blinked, surprised. "Now that you mention it, I do believe Ashley had got a new pair of slippers, a gift from a distant relative."

"We should go check out her house," Bel murmured to Phoebe. "Bet those shoes have something to do with this."
