Archaeology Club, 4pm, the Library

Evie is entirely too gleeful today. Possibly it's all the Caff-Pow, possibly it's the doughnuts that are open in the box on the table.

"I found us another excavation site!" She spread out a map of the island on the center table. "It's just north of Selkie Cove. Or, at any rate, it's supposed to be. The wreck of the Albatross, a Spanish privateer that was run aground in 1592. Captain Gregory Thorpe and crew had to abandon ship and head into the mainland, and weren't able to find the wreck later. It could have ended up in the sea caves along the shore, and it definitely hasn't been excavated since."

"I think next week, we should go out to the site and try to ascertain where it might have ended up. As well as making lists this week, of what we'll need to start a full dig! I'm going to look for more information in Special Collections this week, to narrow the search down, if anyone else wants to help with that."

"Who thinks they'll be able to help with examining the site next week?"

"Assuming we get the permit within the next week or so, what are we going to need to excavate a possibly half-sunk 16th Century shipwreck? Especially so it's not damaged too badly?"

Because they're right there, along with extra Caff-Pow.

Dr. Jackson & Dr. Covington may have some ideas to share.

I know I've forgotten something....

The Albatross is from the 1940 movie "The Sea Hawk" with Errol Flynn as Capt. Geoffrey Thorpe, set right before the attack of the Spanish Armada. Privateers had a license to pillage as many Spanish ships as they wanted. Oooo. Gold!

"I am so there." Blair grinned at Evie.

William Kessler

"I...might be able to." Billy said hesitantly. It sounded interesting, but he hadn't made up his mind about certain things.

Evie looked gleeful. "We'll need to set stakes! And make a map! Oh, and pictures." She frowned. "I don't know anything about modern photography, what kind of photos would be best?"

"Well, if it wound up in sea caves, diving equpment? Otherwise, shovels, uhm, sifter things, and...small brushes?"

Caffine and sugar. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

"Well, we'll certainly leave you a space?" Evie said hopefully. "It's probably quite a large site, and we can use all the help that we can get. Let us know if you can't make it, I suppose."

Evie was already writing these things down. "What is modern diving equipment like? Is it very complicated? Or do you think we'd have to wait until the tides are out?"

"Digital photos would be good. I know the school has some that they loaned out during photography class this summer." Blair nodded. "We should also make sure we don't upset any wildlife that has made their home in the wreckage."

"I think waiting for low tide would be a good idea. Modern equipment's pretty compact, mask for your eyes, a wetsuit, and an oxygen tank. Oh and flippers."

If he couldn't make it likely he wouldn't be telling anyone.

"No problem."

Writing this down, Evie nodded, and said, "I supposed there could be a great many shellfish and starfish, as well as other animals, that could be inhabiting a 400-year-old wreck. I was reading about the Titanic, and how it's a source of nutrients and shelter for marine wildlife." She looked worried. "But just *leaving* it there can't be good for it. It's a wooden ship, eventually it will decay into nothing."

More notes jotted down, and Evie nodded. "Do you know how to use it? Or do you know how we could get certified on this type of equipment?"

"Even so, we should be careful." Blair nodded seriously. "I can do some research online to see what's the best method of relocation."

"I've seen it used, never used it myself. Might be able to put a call on the radio to find out if someone knows. Or the internet."

"That would be wonderful," Evie said gratefully. "I don't want this site to be destroyed because we're using outdated methods. Maybe we just need to set up barriers to preserve it, or supports, if it turns out to be too entrenched in the coastline and not in any immediate danger."

"Splendid!" Evie did a little chair-dance. "That would be very helpful. Thank you, Billy!"

"That's a good idea." Blair nodded. "Maybe you can have Dr. Jackson ~~handwavy~~ look over it before you bring students out. He was just on a dig this summer, so he'd be up to date on what methods to use to keep things safe."

"That's a good idea. We have to find it first, though. I've never been in the sea caves, are they extensive?" Evie wondered.

"No problem."

"I've never been through them either. It'll be an adventure!" Blair bounced.

Evie gleed and rubbed her hands together. "Oh, we should get electric torches, and rope, so we don't get lost! And chalk. And, and, a compass." More equipment list scribbling on Evie's part.

"Those hats with the light on the top!" Blair grinned and bounced. "Totally cool looking."

"Brilliant!" Evie did a little chair-dance. "Ooo. We shall have to make a map of the caves, in order to find our way back. But just think! There might be remains of the sailors, and the logbook, and oh, perhaps some artifacts... oh, yay!"

"Yay!" Blair agreed. "I volunteer to not help with the map. Believe me, it's better for all of us that way."

Evie giggled. "Not quite your area of expertise?"

"You know those little mazes that they give kids, to find their way across the page?" Blair shrugged. "I've never even been able to complete one of those, much less use a map with any degree of success."

"Right then. No asking Blair for directions," Evie teased. "I'll do that part if no one else, if you take the photos. I can't say that I'm *proficient* at it, but I should be able to construct a basic map."

"Photo's I can manage." Blair grinned. "You lead and I'll take very artistic and useful photos of things."

Zack Addy

Zack grinned. "I'm there."

Evie blushed a little, then smiled happily. "Yay! Do you think you'd be able to draw a decent map? Or, or, use one of those, um, GPS things?"

"I should be able to do either of those."

"Yes!" Evie made a little tick-mark on her list, looking delighted. "Thank you, Zack."
