Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period 5

The classroom was still festively decorated for Halloween, but this time, Lorelai had boxes of Klondikes in a cooler in the front of the room.

“Afternoon, everyone,” she greeted with a grin. “After class last week, I was asked to explain a modern invention and I decided that, even though it doesn’t have anything to do with today’s lesson, I’d bring you all Klondike bars. They’re ice cream and chocolate and you can all help yourselves.”

After those who wanted them had taken the ice cream, she started in on her lecture.

“Last week we learned about fall and winter holidays, today we’re going to learn about spring and summer holidays.”

She explained the history and current traditions associated with Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and The 4th of July.

“Any questions?” she asked when she was done. “Before you go, I want to give you a homework assignment for next week. We’ll be starting our TV section and next week’s lesson will cover sitcoms. I want you all to try to catch an episode of a sitcom sometime between now and next class.”

Peter listened diligently during the St. Patricks Day part. It was one of his favorite holidays. Yay beer!

Jaye might be more focused on the Klondike bar. What? It's free ice cream.

So that was a Klondike Bar. Huh. He couldn't think of much he would do for one.

Luke glanced down at the ice cream, then over at Bel and shrugged.

He didn't get the appeal.

Kaylee listened to the lecture, but she was mostly interested in the Klondike Bar.

Zuko was frowning at the bar, poking it carefully and wondering if he should heat it up or what.

He blinked at the homework assignment. "Sitcom?"

"Problem Zuko?" Marty said munching on a Klondike bar.

Cedric listened to the lecture and recognized some of the holidays. Some were more unclear and he made a note to research them.

And he also made a note to research Klondike bars.

Joxer would have listened diligently to the lecture...

...if he hadn't taken a huge bite of the Klondike bar and given himself brainfreeze from eating it too fast.

Pete spent the lecture nibbling at his Klondike bar (an interesting, tasty concoction. One that he could imagine a man doing quite a bit to get his hands on. . . .) and doodling some sort of elaborate diagram in his notebook.

Mac wrinkled her nose at the description of a klondike bar, she had a sneaking suspicion it wasn't vegan. She seemed to be one of the few concentrating solely on the lecture.

Stark happily polished off his Klondike bar while trying to pay attention to the lecture.

He wasn't sure what martyrs had to do with chocolate and hearts in the middle of winter, but he remembered the weetiny bunnies wandering around with eggs last Easter, so at least that holiday was sort of familiar. The Fourth of July he remembered for the fireworks from this summer, and now that he knew what that was about he decided any holiday where you were celebrating being free was a good thing.

Evie ate her Klondike bar as neatly as she could, but she still ended up with ice cream and chocolate on her skirt. But it was worth it, mmmmm!

Lavender dilegently took notes. St. Patrick's Day and The 4th of July were particularly foreign.

Half-way through the lecture, Briar noticed an interesting pattern and started writing up similiarties between his holiday's and Earth holidays.
