Friday, September 29, Second Period

Once again the furniture has been rearranged. There are large comfortable pillows and cushions on the floor, and between each set of two is a low table with two decks of cards sitting on it. One deck is an ordinary set of playing cards, the other is a classical tarot deck. There are also two sets of handouts on each table. As usual, a table of tea and coffee, scones, cookies, and tea sandwiches has been provided.

"Today's exercise is on Cartomancy, or the skill of divining through cards. Cartomancy can be done using ordinary playing cards, although many people choose to use the more ornate and specialized tarot cards. You have a choice to use either one today. Once you've gotten comfortable, I want you to follow the guidelines on your handouts and do a simple reading for your lab partner. You can choose any layout you like, although you must use a minimum of three cards. If you're not certain what to choose, consider using the Celtic Cross, which is a very common layout for general readings."

HOMEWORK: One of the handouts is actually a take-home test. Please complete the test and bring with you to lab next Friday.

"Why, Lyra...are you saying something about my cookie intake?" Blair whispered back.

Lyra grinned. "No, only that you have all the chocolate chip ones. I'll trade you a sugar cookie for one of yours."

"Sugar cookies for chocolate chips?" Blair thought about that for a moment. "It seems like just a sugar cookie doesn't add up to the worth of a chocolate chip cookie. What else ya got to sweeten the pot?"

Lyra bit her lip. "Hmmm. I'd offer tea, but I see you already have some. How about two sugar cookies?"

She does, after all, have a plate full of them on the table next to her.

Blair rolled his eyes. "Quanity does not equal quality. What's a chocolate chip cookie worth these days?" Blair bit into one of his with a grin.

Lyra narrowed her eyes. She could just have Pan steal his like he'd stolen John's but that wasn't as much fun.

"I'll..." Doing his homework for him wasn't a good bargaining chip, either. He liked schoolwork.

"I'll come to your next protest."

"Good deal." Blair raised an eyebrow and passed over two cookies. "One cookie for the trade, and one for being my friend."

Lyra grinned and set the plate of sugar cookies between them. Then she glanced up at the teacher and back at Blair.

"What happened? I mean, you don't look your best, and I'm sure you're sick of people asking, but..." She looked slightly worried.

"I had a run in with demons when I went to the mainland with Dr. Wilson this week." Blair said. "I'm okay now, though."

"Is that why he looked like he'd been hit by a train? I do hope he's alright." Lyra bit her lip.

"Demons? It wasn't..." she hesitated. "It didn't have anything to do with Bel, did it?"

"I think he's okay."

"No!" Blair shook his head. "Bel isn't like that, man. Seriously. He actually came and helped. He saved my life."

"Good! Good," Lyra looked relieved. "It's just, he's the only demon, I mean, half-demon I know of."

"Good," she repeated, not sure why it was so important to her. Time to change the subject, though. "Are, uh, are you doing anything special for homecoming?"

"Oh, well, don't worry about him. He's a good guy." Blair smiled.

"I don't know really. You?"

Lyra shrugged. "I hadn't really thought about it. I don't have anyone coming for Parents' Night, and nobody's asked me to the dance. The handout in Popular Culture said there was usually a, uh, football game to go along with everything, but I don't even know what that means."

Lyra shook her head. School in this wrld was a lot more complicated than at home.

"Why don't you ask someone to the dance." Blair said with a smile. "Are there any boys that you like? Or girls for that matter."

Lyra blushed. "No, no girls," she sighed. "And no boys, either. It's- I don't..."

She kind of wished she hadn't brought it up. "There was someone, before Fandom. It, uh, didn't work out." That wasn't the understatement of the year.

"I guess... I don't think I'm over it yet."
