Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Lab Four

Friday, September 29, Second Period

Once again the furniture has been rearranged. There are large comfortable pillows and cushions on the floor, and between each set of two is a low table with two decks of cards sitting on it. One deck is an ordinary set of playing cards, the other is a classical tarot deck. There are also two sets of handouts on each table. As usual, a table of tea and coffee, scones, cookies, and tea sandwiches has been provided.

"Today's exercise is on Cartomancy, or the skill of divining through cards. Cartomancy can be done using ordinary playing cards, although many people choose to use the more ornate and specialized tarot cards. You have a choice to use either one today. Once you've gotten comfortable, I want you to follow the guidelines on your handouts and do a simple reading for your lab partner. You can choose any layout you like, although you must use a minimum of three cards. If you're not certain what to choose, consider using the Celtic Cross, which is a very common layout for general readings."

HOMEWORK: One of the handouts is actually a take-home test. Please complete the test and bring with you to lab next Friday.

Marty busily shuffles the cards and wonders what playing poker with tarot cards would be like.

"Your turn to do the reading this week?" Joxer asked, sitting down near Marty.

"Sure," Marty said laying out the first card. "We'll do a past, present, future reading. What question do you have?"

"Huh," Joxer said. "How about... how big of a hero am I going to be?" Joxer asked after finally having gotten the comment notification, wtf, LJ?

Marty laid the first card down.

"Well this is your past card with is the reversed Daughter of cups. According to the hand out this refers to someone selfish and idle who cannot see the difference between fantasy and reality. A banal flatterer who involes themselvs in gossip and lies."

Marty then lays down the next car.

"This is your present card which is the wheel of fortune card which represents an unpredictable turn of events. Something is taking hold of your life and going a new direction."

Then Marty lays down the last card. "This is the reversed two stones card. According to the handout this means that you will be losing your balance. Discord and fighting will be a part of your including the feeling as though something is missing. A crack will appear in your future plans."

Joxer laughed. "Like I can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality?"
