Internet for Dummies, Wednesday 9/27, 3rd Period

"Everyone open your laptops and use your favorite browser to go to the Google website." Abby flashed the website up on the screen behind her. "Today we are going to learn about the guiltest of pleasures...googling yourself."

"Depending on how you do it, soooo dirty."

Abby gave a brief lecture on search engines in general and specifically the history of google. "Now googling has the potential to bring up a lot of porn on the most innocent of searches, so think twice about what you type in. To get us started you can feel free to google my name, see what you can bring up."

After they finished that activity, Abby pointed back up to the screen. "Now I want you guys to google yourself and see what's out there. If you want, you can try and google your classmates."

[ooc:ooc: Please wait for ocd threads. Up! Play!]

[ooc2 electric boogaloo: Googling Abby Sciuto will bring up her NCIS employee assessment file and they can also find the following pictures. Some of them she knows about, a few she doesn't. Mod which of these things you find and feel free to talk about it amongst yourselves or talk to Abby about them]

[return of the ooc: Googling yourself: You are in control of how much or how little information will come up on your character. You can decide to have canon information be found, historical records of your characters birth/death, pictures...whatever. If you want something to show up but it doesn't really make sense for it...handwave. It's Fandom, people! If you don't want your character to find anything at all about him/her, that doesn't mean that they can't have fun and find other stuff. Pictures of other people with the same name, etc.]

[mothra vs.ooc: Googling others: If you want to google other students you need to ask them, either IC or OOC. I'm very, very serious about this. Find out if you can do the search and let them set the parameters. It can be as detailed as what I did for Abby or as vague as saying "Blair didn't mind people googling for him but all they would find were a bunch of message board posts on enhanced senses and a picture from when he and Naomi chained themselves to an oil rig." Don't mod google finds for other students. Seriously, don't do it. I will...do something horrible to you if you do. Grrr.]

Kawalsky googled himself. There were sixteen pages of Charlie Kawalskys, but anyone who looked wouldn't find the Kawalsky sitting in the room. Except perhaps a link to an obituary for 'Charles Kawalsky' in an archive of obituaries for Harrison, NY down on page 11.

Charlie didn't see that himself, though.

Pete slowly and laboriously typed his name into the search engine.

A buncha people who definitely weren't him. Apparently the internet did not span back to--oh, wait, here!

Pete Hutter was perhaps the most ridiculous and bungling gun slinger in the old west. . . .

Wait, no, that had to be about someone else.

Jamie started googling himself expecting to see the usual stuff. Game show winner. Member of X-Factor. Yadda. Yadda. Yadda.

What came back? Wasn't him. Not even close.

He began googling other people he knew and felt his stomach go cold. Sapien rights? Princess Ororo? House of M?

Jamie sat and stared at the computer screen for quite a while.

WTF?

Door has a feeling she knows what she'll find, but she dutifully types her own name into the search engine.

649,000,000 results for Door, none of which are her, and nil for Lady Door of the House of the Arch. One of which is her.

Mac has googled herself many times before. She already knows exactly what she'll find, and none of it's very interesting. Mostly from the Neptune High website.

She spends the time looking up website designs (http://www.misspato.com/links/index.php), for inspirationary purposes. The google homepage is in another tab, just in case.

Ray googled himself.

There were, apparently, a lot of Ray's in the world and Google thought he spelled his last name wrong and kept suggesting corrections until Ray finally just went with Google's suggestions. Those results produced marraige photos of an elderly couple and that stupid classmates.com website that wanted his money just to locate Ray Kawalsky.

Briar found a lot of information about briars and moss but none that had anything to do with the actual boy. Big surprise.

Jude didn't find much on himself - a couple of blogs came up. Ow. Mike Dint was a bitter, bitter boy.

Way too many hits on St. Jude.

And it kept coming up with these references to some dude named Christian Potenza . . .

Evie typed her name into Google, and got several hits.

Mr. Evelyn Carnahan, b. 1815, d. 1872--

Right, not her.

Evelyn Adelaide Carnahan-Inverness, Duchess of Marlborough, b. 1942--

Also not her. Though it was tempting to check that and see if she was some future relation.

Dr. Evelyn Carnahan. CV and publications...

"Eep!"

Evie sat there frozen for several seconds before she started hyperventilating.

Togusa Googled himself, and came up with 24 pages that dealed with people with the same name, but thankfully, he was not one of them.

This was a good thing since he shouldn't be part of the search, as precautionary measures beforehand stated (Thanks to the Major) that while at Fandom, nothing about him and Section 9 would be listed.

Angela Googled Abby and started giggling at one of the photos.

"I cannot imagine her doing that."

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
After she had a few minutes to recover and back away from the information about herself on Google, Evie checked on Abby.

"Nine tattoos?" And very impressive academic credentials, and... "Ooo. Brain spatter?"

Door reads Abby's NCIS profile with interest, though she's a bit bemused at the tone of the compiler. "As troublesome footnotes go, that's...not very. What's wrong with pallor?"

Re: Chatter

Angela sat at her computer for a few minutes, flexing her fingers, befre she went to talk to Abby. "Ms. Sciuto? What if we don't want to Google ourselves?"
chasingangela: (curious)

Re: Chatter

[personal profile] chasingangela 2006-09-27 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kind of?," Angela said. "I'm from, like, 10 years in the past, and I have this fear that if I find out what older-me is up to, the universe will explode or something." She pushed her hair back. "I'm being silly, but ... so can I look you up instead?"
chasingangela: (impish smile)

Re: Chatter

"I've had all year to obsess about this," Angela shrugged. "Thanks."

"Professor Abby?" Evie took a deep breath as she approached. "I have a very important question for you."

Re: Chatter

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, two questions." Evie swallowed. "How do we know, that the self we google that turns up *here*, is the same one that is at home?" She frowned. "That didn't come out correctly. I meant, there's alternate universes and people and twin and, and--" She pointed to the print-out. "I didn't expect to find anything! Dr. Evelyn Carahan! Right there!" She was squeaking and waving her arms at this point.

"And, um, do you know where I could buy more Caff-Pow?"

Re: Chatter

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thank you. I mean, I'd just begun to think it was possible, coming here, it's so difficult to finish an advance degree in my time, I was *hoping*, but..." Evie clutched the printout to herself and did a little dance of glee. "I'm afraid to read the rest. But there's ten publications! It went onto the next page!" She took a breath. "All & Sundries *and* the Kwik-Stop, then." Evie's smile widened as she accepted the cup. "And thank you, so much. I love this drink, it makes me feel all fizzy and I love this class and just-- hurray!"

Victory sign for Evie, with various papers falling down around her.

So you know, Angela has a thing about not finding out what she's up to in real-time, since she's from 1996 -- she worries that if she knows too much, she'll change her life. She'll happily Google other people.
