Dummies' Guide to Alice in Wonderland

"Good afternoon," Thursday greeted from the front of the class. Behind her, as she spoke, a cat started to appear out of nowhere - grin first. "First of all, you should all know that Hamlet Dane is now the TA for this class. This week we're discussing Alice in Wonderland. Those of you from 20th century Earth would at least know it by reputation."

"I have a reputation?" the appearing cat said.

Thursday stepped aside and looked back. "Apparently," she replied. "As promised, we have a guest in our class today. This is the Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat, or the Cat Formerly Known As Cheshire. You would know him from the novel as the Cheshire Cat."

The Cat looked around the room with eyes that just appeared into view. "Does anyone have any Mogglicious cat food?"

Thursday continued without waiting for anyone to answer him. "The Cat is here to prove a point. Last week we discussed the power of words. Today's topic is how words can be used to confuse. Each of you are free to ask the Cat any questions. He will answer as he pleases."

"What if I please not to answer at all?"

"No Mogglicious."

The Cat appeared into full view. "Shall we begin?" he asked with a grin.

"Well, those ARE marvellous. Although not when you put them together. That could lead to a nautical mishap and Captain Nemo gets cranky when I instigate those."

"Does he? That isn't quite so marvellous. " She laughs. "So are you aboard his ship often?"

"Only for dinner parties."

"Well dinner is a good time for visitors." She nods.

"I prefer visitors at lunch. Then we can play Afterwards. Mr Afterwards doesn't really appreciate us playing him, though."

"Well that's not very gentlemanly of him."

"Well he's a harp, not a gentleman, so you're right."

"That seems odd. A hard that doesn't like to be played? So... what DOES he like to do? Golf?"

"Play Chinese checkers. He's quite good."

"That's a fun game. Are you good at it?"

"No. I don't speak Chinese - Mandarin or Cantonese."

"I don't either. What DO you speak?"

"The more valid question is what don't I speak. I don't speak a few languages. Arthropod is completely beyond me."

"Can't say I know that one either."

"That's because it won't develop for another 900 million years."

"It's good to know we'll outlast the sun supernova-ing."

"Well, reading will at least. I don't quite know about us. We could, I suppose, if there was time travel involved. I do like a good trip away from fiction from time to time."

Matilda smiles. She enjoyed her chat with the Cat. "As do I. I should probably give you a chance to talk to everyone else. It's been a very informative conversation. Thank you."

The Cat grinned even wider if that was at all possible. "It's been a pleasure," he replied. "If you ever want to chat again, you know where to find me."

"Right." She laughs a bit. Best. Class. Ever.

The Cat removed his ears like a hat to bid her good day and hoped that one day he would see her again.
