Dummies' Guide to Alice in Wonderland

"Good afternoon," Thursday greeted from the front of the class. Behind her, as she spoke, a cat started to appear out of nowhere - grin first. "First of all, you should all know that Hamlet Dane is now the TA for this class. This week we're discussing Alice in Wonderland. Those of you from 20th century Earth would at least know it by reputation."

"I have a reputation?" the appearing cat said.

Thursday stepped aside and looked back. "Apparently," she replied. "As promised, we have a guest in our class today. This is the Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat, or the Cat Formerly Known As Cheshire. You would know him from the novel as the Cheshire Cat."

The Cat looked around the room with eyes that just appeared into view. "Does anyone have any Mogglicious cat food?"

Thursday continued without waiting for anyone to answer him. "The Cat is here to prove a point. Last week we discussed the power of words. Today's topic is how words can be used to confuse. Each of you are free to ask the Cat any questions. He will answer as he pleases."

"What if I please not to answer at all?"

"No Mogglicious."

The Cat appeared into full view. "Shall we begin?" he asked with a grin.

"But I did know."

"Then you're just being rude?"

"Now replace 'Memphis' with 'Cheshire' and 'boy' with 'cat' and we have our dilemma."

"But I wasn't trying to be rude," Cameron flailed. "There's just no other way to describe your grin!"

The Cat grinned again. "I'm not offended. In fact, I'm not ended at all."

"That makes absolutely no sense," Cameron remarked as if the rest of their conversation had made sense.

"It makes the sense of hearing, but perhaps not taste."

"Definitely not taste," he agreed with a frown. "Don't you sometimes confuse yourself?"

"No, I confuse myself all the time. It makes life very interesting."

Cameron blinked. "Have you considered looking for a different hobby?"

"I tried knitting, but the sheep became annoyed when I knitted away all of its wool."

The imagery that produced made Cameron laugh. "I think it's a lot easier if you just buy wool from the store."

"Not if you're knitting in the middle of a field."

"Well no, but..." He frowned. "It really doesn't matter what I'm going to say, does it?"

"That depends. Do you know where you want the conversation to end up?"

"With me still feeling sane, preferably."

The Cat chuckled. "Well that's never going to happen."

Cameron raised an eyebrow. "I could just walk away now..."

"If you did, then that would be the answer to your question. It doesn't matter what you say if you're going to end the conversation." He flicked his tail.

"Uh... I guess?" he frowned.

"Ooh I like guessing. Let me try. I guess...pumpernickel!"

"No!" Cameron blinked. "You need to let me think of something first before you start guessing."

"Why?"
