Dummies' Guide to Alice in Wonderland

"Good afternoon," Thursday greeted from the front of the class. Behind her, as she spoke, a cat started to appear out of nowhere - grin first. "First of all, you should all know that Hamlet Dane is now the TA for this class. This week we're discussing Alice in Wonderland. Those of you from 20th century Earth would at least know it by reputation."

"I have a reputation?" the appearing cat said.

Thursday stepped aside and looked back. "Apparently," she replied. "As promised, we have a guest in our class today. This is the Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat, or the Cat Formerly Known As Cheshire. You would know him from the novel as the Cheshire Cat."

The Cat looked around the room with eyes that just appeared into view. "Does anyone have any Mogglicious cat food?"

Thursday continued without waiting for anyone to answer him. "The Cat is here to prove a point. Last week we discussed the power of words. Today's topic is how words can be used to confuse. Each of you are free to ask the Cat any questions. He will answer as he pleases."

"What if I please not to answer at all?"

"No Mogglicious."

The Cat appeared into full view. "Shall we begin?" he asked with a grin.

"I hop quite often, yes."

"So why does hopping make you happy?"

"Hopping makes me hoppy because I hop." He demonstrated by hopping on his head.

Naomi stared for a few minutes, "that's quite clever," she said at last

"Being clever is quite unlike being a lever. I assume. I've never really asked a lever what it's like to be a lever. Have you?"

"I have to say that I haven't actually talked to a lever before," Naomi was feeling very confused

"Oh, well you should. They do all kinds of things. To-ing and fro-ing. They like to play piano, you know."

"Actually I didn't know that they like to play piano,"

"Some levers are the best piano players I know."

"I didn't know that," Naomi is still not sure what to make of this conversation.

"Oh yes," he said, rolling onto his back to lounge on the desk. "Do you play the piano?"

"I had some lessons when I was younger," Naomi replied, "the past couple of years I haven't had the chance really to play,"

"To play what?"

"The piano,"

"It's a musical instrument," Naomi now had to wonder how on earth they had gotten on to this subject

"Can you play a non-musical instrument?"

"I haven't tried to play a non-musical instrument," Naomi said slowly as she tried to figure out how that was actually possible

"Not even the kazoo? Or the bagpipes?"

Naomi shook her head, "can't say that I've played either of them," she replied, thinking that she hadn't exactly had the opportunity to play either the kazoo or bagpipes in her lifetime.

"Professionals can't play them either. They try, but they don't make music, so they must not be musical instruments or the players can't play. Either way, no music is made."

"I guess," was the only thing that Naomi could think of to say once she somehow managed to work out what he had actually said
