Logan was sitting on his desk, as usual, when the students filed in. The screen was rolling through a slide show of print ads from magazines from many eras and for many different products. The coffee machine was burbling happily in the back of the class for anyone interested.

On each desk, there was a laptop, all of them on and connected wirelessly to the school network. Alongside each was a handout.

"Good morning, everyone! This week we'll be looking at printed media, specifically advertisements. Your assignment is to look through the archives of ads provided and choose one in particular that you think does its job - in other words, the logo, the color scheme, something about the ad makes you interested in the product. If you feel like it, go ahead and surf the internet a bit and see if there's something a bit more interesting out there. "

Logan turned slightly where he was sitting and typed something on a keyboard on his desk, bring up a couple of advertisements [ooc: warning, large image] on the screen behind him. "Once you've done that, we'll bring it up for everyone to see and you can tell us why it is you chose it. Everyone's encouraged to give their opinion on the advertisement you chose as well.

"Oh, and remember, next week we'll be going over what the midterm will be, so it's in your best interests to make sure you're here. If you can't be, let me know and we can arrange to meet in my office for a briefing."

Elizabeth flicked through the sites, waiting for one to catch her attention.

Sam had two windows open, one to look for ads, and one to surf a bit aimlessly.

Dean searched through the provided ad sites looking for an ad that jumped out at him.

Jaye and her not-feeling-wellness are kind of happy with whatever she finds first.

Sam found her ad, and then proceeded to surf the 'net.

Carmela went looking for an ad, totally not getting distracted and actually *shopping*, no.

Peter looked for an ad, wheee.

"I picked this one. It got my attention because, well, snot. You don't see snot every day. And I think I'd be likely to check out Science World now if they're offering snot at bus stops."

"I picked this one because...wow. Just wow. I think my eyes need a bath now and I won't ever forget this image and probably this product either. Wow."

"Wow."

Summer showed off her ad.

"I chose this one because it totally caught my attention. It's pretty powerful, but simple at the same time. No visual effects were used. Just nature being dramatic on its own."

"Wow," said Elizabeth, nodding. "That's a picture in a million really, isn't it?"

"It really is," Summer agreed.

"This one (http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/guinness), because it's so simple and instantly recognizable as Guinness, before you even take the rugby part of it into account," said Elizabeth. "I like this advertisement for costumes, because it's funny, without being gross or something that you can't show little kids."

"I like the way it combines visual representation of sound waves with obvious speed. It gets the idea of car stero across pretty well."

Jaye points at her ad.

"I'm jealous of her," she explains.

Sam clicked on her ad (http://www.adflip.com/addetails.php?adID=368). "I like it because it's stark, but by focusing on the gauges, it shows exactly why you'd buy this 'vette--a serious need for speed."

"We've all seen these (http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/ipod_posters) around. The color choices really jump out, the basic color backgrounds and the black silhouettes really make the iPod the focus while whatever silly style the models are wearing are secondary even though it's the big part of the posters," Peter said. "Also, it's so easy for internet users to spoof, which is fun."
