Ms. Frizzle is waiting for the students inside the Danger Shop, which had been transformed to look like a lab environment. The teacher herself, however, was in a khaki dress with khaki pumps, a pith helmet atop her frizzy red hair, and two bones for earrings. "Good morning, students!" she trilled cheerfully when they arrived. There was a large blackboard leaning behind her with a list of names:

"Today for your detention, we're going to help out an old friend of mine! Dr. Carmina Skeledon is working at a dinosaur dig in the Badlands of Alberta, and I'm afraid that last time my class visited her we misplaced one of her fossils. But I think that this group is just the right people for the job! So!" She led the way out of the Danger Shop. "Everyone to the bus!"

"We might as well get to know each other! My name is Ms Frizzle and I am the new science teacher! I used to teach at Walkerville Elementary School. And this is Liz." Liz waved from beside the driver's seat. Liz was also wearing a small pith helmet. "Your turn!"

Once everyone had arrived and was on board, Ms Frizzle bounced into the driver's seat and flung the doors closed. "Hit it, Liz!" she crowed, and gunned it. The bus bounced, hopped, skipped, and vanished in a bang and flash of white light, reappearing in the middle of what appeared to be lush wetlands. The students will notice that they're also in safari clothes now.

"Welcome to Alberta, Canada, circa sixty-seven million years ago!" the teacher announced. "We're looking for an Albertasaurus egg! It looks like this - Liz?"

Liz held up a picture of the egg.

"Alright, have fun!"

[[Yep, you'll encounter dinosaurs from here on out.]]

Suddenly, there's a crashing sound through the underbrush and an unmistakeable roar! Someone isn't happy about poking around in their playground.

"Uh-oh . . ." Ms Frizzle said, still managing to sounding cheerful as the Tyrannasaurus rex burst through the trees. "Looks like we're going to need a little firepower! Students, get ready to take chances! Make mistakes! And get . . . tyrannical!"

The bus zapped them all with something, causing them to grow in size to be a match for the T. rex, which suddenly didn't look quite so sure of itself any more.

[[Fight!]]

T. rex dealt with and students back to their normal size, Ms Frizzle led them on their continued safari. Suddenly, she drops to the ground at the crest of a hill and peers over. "A ha!" she says softly. "I think we've found it!"

Below is a slowly moving herd of Maiasaur, a few nests dotting the flat meadow. The Albertasaurus egg is clearly comfortably snug in one of the nearest ones, being guarded by a placidly chewing Maiasaur.

"Well, students, wasn't that fun?" Ms Frizzle asked as the bus reappeared on the front lawn of the school. "And I hope you all learned your lesson and won't have detention ever again! Other teachers might not be as lenient as I am! I have to get this egg - which had turned into a fossil when they time-traveled again - back to Carmina! Goodbye!"

And she hopped back inside the bus and it vanished again.

Today's detention, if I had typed it up last night while I was drinking, would have been The Magic School Bus Explores the Penal System. Carlos would show you how to get shanked for being a smartass, and Arnold should have stayed home to avoid becoming the bitch. The students's clothes would all be transformed into orange jumpsuits, Liz would have a wee baton, Ms Frizzle would be shouting "Hose them down!", and Phoebe would be complaining that "At my old school, we were never given the lethal inject-"

Um. Sorry about the childhoods there.

"Belthazor," Bel said sullenly, still annoyed he had to spend Saturday in detention.

Bel looked down at his new attire. "What the hell is this?" he said.

"The appropriate clothing, of course!" Ms Frizzle replied, unconsciously posing in her own.

"I like my own clothes better," Bel grumbled.

I'll be back in about an hour.

Ms Frizzle just laughed and patted him on the shoulder. "Too bad!"

"So let's get this over with," Bel said. "Where do we look for this egg?"

"I'm Schrodinger," Schrodinger said, putting his feet up on the seat across from him. "I'm everywhere and nowhere."

"I would imagine somewhere there are Albertasauri," Schrodinger said as he looked at his pith helmet.

Elementary school? "I'm Sam Carter."

Sam adjusted hers on her head. "Do we know what an Albertasaurus looks like?"

Scrhodinger took a step back and watched as the other fought the T-Rex. He wanted to see how they all moved.

Does Schrodinger's pith helmet take into account his ears?

"Okay, this is cool," Bel said, summoning a super-sized fireball and throwing it at the T-Rex.

Sam was a little disoriented at first by the abrupt change in altitude and perspective. She wasn't sure exactly what to do to fight the T-rex, but she supposed she could always just kick its feet out from underneath it and run away quickly.

But of course.

Sorry about the vanish. There were guys in kilts and blue facepaint and a digerydoo, and next thing I know I'm standing in the middle of the rugby field screaming "FREEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOM! YE DAMNED SASSANACH WILL COME NAE FURTHA!" at the PEI team.

"They're part of the Tyrannosaurus family of dinosaurs!" Ms Frizzle announced. "Slightly smaller, but have the same large head, small forearms, and floating ribcage as their larger and more well-known cousins!"

"...and we want an egg why?"
