Jack was leaning against the desk at the front of the class, grinning hugely as the other students arrived. Once they were all seated, he gestured expansively and said, "You lucky people are stuck with me today, because the Doctor's got a very hot date. Not so luckily, he put together a vague lesson plan, otherwise I'd say let's skip class and head to the bar."

He passed around the handouts the Doctor had prepared on the the Menoptera, the Optera, the Wirrn and the Zarbi, and then talked briefly about each of the species. When he was finished, he jumped up to sit on the desk. "Now, this class is supposed to be about Constant Vigilance. About learning to watch out for what the universe has to offer. And what it often has to offer - as the Doctor so recently discovered - is a date. But whether you're after a date or not, learning to get someone interested is a very valuable skill, one that can lead you into - and out of - a lot of trouble. And even if you lose your gun, your sword, or even your big rock, you've almost always got your tongue." He smirked. "Which I want you to use for talking only."

"Split into pairs. One takes on the role of one of the aliens we learned about today. The other: chat them up and get a date, or an assignation, or at the very least friendly conversation. Don't get your head bitten off. It's difficult to have any fun when you don't have a head. Use what you learned about your partner's species - and whatever you can get them to tell you - to make yourself attractive to them, whether it's sexually, romantically, or whatever. Remember that your partner looks like the alien they're pretending to be, so you might not think they're pretty - but I wouldn't let them know that if I were you. Feel free to exaggerate, boast, bluff, make wild promises or outright lie. Whatever it takes." He looked around the class, expression momentarily serious. "Because sometimes the only thing that will save your life is that the being threatening you prefers you alive to dead."

"And that's it. Go for it, have fun, and grab me if you have any questions. But don't grab me anywhere interesting, because technically this is a school."

Both partners can lie like politicians, and if you need to know something about the species you're pretending to be: make it up. I'm hoping to actually sleep btn EST 10am-3pm, so probably won't be around then, but I'll pick up Jack pings upon awakening. "So it's a date, then."

"Agreed. I'd offer to shake on it, but I'm not sure which of my six legs would be appropriate."

"Watch what you do with those legs when we're dancing. I'm not that kind of guy."

"So what kind of guy are you, then?"

"Apparently the type of guy who will go out with a bug-like person."

"And yet complains about where the bug-like person puts her extra legs?"

"I wouldn't want you to think I was easy. You might not respect me in the morning."

"Well, I am based on an insect race. Some of us bite the heads off our mates before morning ever gets here." Nadia thought about this for a moment. "I wouldn't do that to you, though. Your head would be too squishy."

"I wouldn't want you getting any ideas about implanting your eggs in my body, either. I'm not at all ready to be a parent."

"I'll make sure to keep that in mind."

"Then I'll meet you tonight on the roof. Strictly in the interest of furthering inter-species goodwill, of course."

"Won't that Argentine friend of yours be disappointed?"

"I'll schedule you one after the other." And once she hypothetically killed him, he wouldn't have to worry how the hypothetical dates went.

"Well, in that case, I'll meet you on the roof. Your Earth dating culture is very strange, though. Do you often arrange to have one date right after the other? Is it to avoid getting your head bitten off?" Nadia smiled sweetly, enjoying her role as the creepy bug-alien.

"Usually I think it would increase the chances of my getting my head bitten off, actually." Or blown off. Or malleted.

"Ah. Well, your friend must be very understanding, then."

"She's something special," Walter agreed. "But you might want to watch out for her. She has good aim."

Nadia grinned. "I'll do that. But I don't know if she'd be prepared for an enemy like me."

"I can't have the two of you fighting over me, though. It just wouldn't be pretty at all." He was starting to make his head hurt keeping up with the idea.

"Well, I'm sure I'll be returning to my hive at some point or something, anyway."

"Where some drone will be very lucky to have you around, I'm sure. At least until your offspring are finished with him."

"Well, that's just the way it works."
