Intro to Magic, 5th Period (Week 3: 9/20/06)

Intro to Magic, 5th Period (Week 3: 9/20/06)

There's coffee around, along with cream, sugar, and a bunch of flavored syrups. "Okay, I wanted to say? Keep in mind that I can teach about magic from my perspective, but if you've got a different kind of magic--speak up. Talk about it with each other. And if you don't get how or why something works for me? Ask questions. Because I get that this is totally different--or nonexistent--for some of you. But how are you gonna learn otherwise?

First off, we're going to be talking about the basics of working with energy. No, we won't be doing any practical demonstrations. But if you're going to be working with magical energy, well, in my dimension, these are the very basics. Grounding. Think of it as extending your energy down into the Earth and anchoring yourself there. A lot of people who do magic without grounding themselves? Get dizzy and lightheaded and in danger of passing out. The bigger the working, the more you need to be grounded.

Yeah. It's kind of like with electricity. You find more than a few parallels between physics and magic. Weird, huh? Please don't ask me too many physics-related questions as anything more than the absolute basics are totally not my strong point OOC. But still, a lot of people visualize themselves as rooted in the Earth like a tree when they ground themselves. Which is kind of a neat analogy too, huh? You can use the concept of grounding solely for magical working, or you can use it for meditation too.

Next in line? Centering. It's a way of focusing. Some people say it's a matter of focusing your mental processes in the center of your head. Personally, I'd say if you focus yourself in your head, great. Some people focus their magical center elsewhere--like their abdomen, maybe, or their heart, or even their physical center of gravity. Some people use visual aids. A lit candle, maybe, or a favorite stone, or a bowl of water. Whatever works, right? It's a very individual thing. A lot of centering is a matter of concentration, making sure your thoughts aren't too scattered to work the magic you're trying to work.

So, the next step after grounding and centering? Shielding. Let's see how long I can stretch this out. Think of shielding as a way to keep yourself safe from unwanted negative energy, or also things like telepathy. Sometimes it can protect you against spells, but usually, not so much. Trust me on that one." No need to get into spellcasting just yet. In fact, next week is probably better for that one.

Think of it like a big bubble of positive energy surrounding you--or your aura, if you're into those. And it filters positive emotions and energy through into it, but it keeps negativity away. And also? It doesn't do a thing about negativity coming from you, and it doesn't affect your emotions. You're responsible for dealing with those all on your own. Asking for magical help to get rid of your bad emotions is kind of like asking for a karmic smack upside the head. Especially on Charmed, God, how many eps have they done on that? Some people visualize their shields differently, with one of the elements, or with a bright light surrounding them instead of a bubble. You could also set a shield around a specific geographical area--generally a room. That's called warding a room.

Group up, and talk about why you think this stuff might be necessary. We're not scheduled to get into curses and negative magic for a bit yet, but I think you guys can see why this might relate."

Course Syllabus & Roster

OOC: I do not have gmail access during the day, so it's best to ping me in the OOC thread for this course if you need anything. If you need something private, head over to Jenny's voice mail, as all comments there are screened.

Wait for the OCD threads, please. Good to go.
