Criminal Justice [1st Period, Tuesday]

"Good morning," V said silkily. "As we discussed last week, there are certain procedures when one is working with law - or," he added softly, amused, "against it. However, it is not always feasible to work in such procedures, or perhaps kinks are thrown into your perfect plan."

He waved a gloved hand at a table at the front, where there were Legos, pipe cleaners, construction paper, marbles, several tea sets, whisks, forks, spoons, tweezers, salt and pepper shakers, batteries, chopsticks, wire, lightbulbs, straws, candles, empty egg cartons, hockey pucks, shoe boxes, and dice - as well as all sorts of tape, glue, and other adhesives.

And for some godforsaken reason, there was glitter.

"You," V said to the class, "will be building mousetraps. Not to ensnare rodents, of course, unless you choose to use them outside of this class. But your work is subject to the criticism of your peers," he gestured expansively to the class, "and your superior." He pointed to himself. "You have the class period. Your trap should be effective, just as plan you formulate - be your timeframe five years, or one hour."

[Wait for OCD It's up, have fun, and thank you to [livejournal.com profile] kawalsky, [livejournal.com profile] multiplez, [livejournal.com profile] bruiser_in_pink and [livejournal.com profile] mparker17 for the suggestions for mousetrap materials.]

Seely blinked slowly then started fiddling with the Legos.

Jack gave it some thought, and gathered up a shoe box, tape, construction paper, a piece of wire, a candle, and a pair scissors presuming there's some kicking around.

After several minutes he grinned and went back for some glue and glitter.

Bel eyed the materials dubiously, then shrugged and got to work.

John eyes the materials and tries to work out a mousetrap that will, once activated, use glitter. He thinks really hard on this.

As a boy, Kawalsky had mastered the game of Mouse Trap. He used the materials to put together a ridiculously complicated mouse trap that would hopefully end with the tea cup shimmying down the reinforced pipe cleaner and onto the mouse. That is, if the mouse stayed very, very still.

Aeryn has absolutely no idea what a mousetrap is. Looking at other people's isn't exactly helping.

Teddy grabbed a teapot and set about building a small ladder for it with chopsticks and pipe cleaners. He stopped halfway through the ladder construction to grab some glitter and glue.

Everything looked better with some glitter on it.

Pete was using the materials to constuct a ravine like path for the mouse to traverse down. Though where he got the rock painted to look like the ravine with a big piece of cheese in it, well. No one will ever be quite sure.

Especially since paint isn't part of the listed supplies.

He's singing softly to himself as he works on gluing his fingers a pipe cleaner cage together.

Peter wanted to point out that a cat would work much better, but he thought that might be missing the point of the lesson. So he took a teapot (everything's better with tea), some candles, wire, a whisk, and construction paper.

After considering for a second, he also appropriated some pipe cleaners and legos. And accidentally dumped glitter on himself.

Alanna grabbed a shoebox and some pipe cleaners and began playing with them. Her bag was moving on it's own a little.

Tyler'd be much more comfortable if he could blow the mice up, but he could trap them if he had to.

He built a tiny cage out of the legos, then added glue so the floor would be sticky, and added an enrance made from straws that would let the mouse in but not out.

If only he had some food to use as bait...

River connected some batteries with wire and put them in a shoe box. She made a mouse-sized hole in the box. Then she covered the inside of the shoe box with glue and sprinkled substantial amounts of glitter on it. Glitter should have metal in it. She added some more batteries, but somehow it didn't quite seem enough to electrocute a mouse. Death by glitter didn't seem to work. She muttered.

Layla looked through the materials, trying to figure out how to create a trap that would catch a mouse in a humane way.

Bridge does a handstand as he tries to think about what kind of mousetrap to build.

After about a minute, he's got an idea, and sets to work on something that will... totally work despite the fact that by all appearances, it shouldn't.

After asking Bel what a mouse was, Luke picked up wire, lightbulbs, batteries, tweezers, Legos, a hockey puck and a shoe box.

A few minutes and several singed fingers later, he had created a tiny droid that wielded a hockey puck with deadly precision. It would chase a mouse towards the shoe box.

Luke was pretty proud of himself.

He didn't know about the glitter on his nose.

[personal profile] multiplez 2006-09-19 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The basic idea behind Z's mousetrap was humane mouse removal on crack. When the mouse approached the bait (held in a pair of tweezers), due to the placement of the whisk and an obstacle saucer, he would have to pass one spot where a trigger wire signaled a falling teacup. The mouse would then be trapped between the teacup and a square of construction paper for easy removal. She covered the whole thing in glitter because mice liked shiny things, right?

The main problem seemed to be keeping the teacup from falling too soon and crushing the mouse.

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-09-19 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Alec was feeling contrary.

Really that just meant he was bored and didn't see the point of making a mousetrap when he could probably just catch the mouse himself anyway.

Therefore, several pipecleaners and an egg carton later, Alec had a dinosaur.

Dean took a couple of light bulbs and smashed them into jagged shards of glass. Then he spread glue all over the bottom of the inside of a shoebox and carefully glued the glass shards, making a makeshift version of a pit of spikes.

He cut a hole in the lid of the shoebox large enough for the average mouse to fall through, then covered it with construction paper so it wasn't easily visible.

Dean wasn't sure it would actually work, but he figured he'd get points for creativity anyway.

[identity profile] peter--parker.livejournal.com 2006-09-20 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Peter looked at the provided materials, picked up a shoe box, and decided to go with the simplest trap available: he would rely on his considerable reflexes which would be able to make just about any mouse's best laid plans go awry and scoop them into the box. It wasn't foolproof, but it would work more times than not.

This left Peter with a lot of extra time in class today.

Kawalsky's trap would have worked great if it didn't take so long to capture the mouse.
