Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai smiled at the students once they'd all entered and taken their seats.

"Morning everyone! Today we're going to learn about dating. It's an important part of the modern high school experience for a lot of students and with Homecoming coming up in a few weeks, I want to give you all the information you'll need to have a wonderful time."

She launched into a short lecture on old-fashioned courtship rituals and how they evolved into modern dating. She also gave out a packet of handouts on Homecoming, Prom, Dating, and Safe Sex.

"Now, I'm going to pair you up and I want you to try asking each other out on dates. In this day and age, it's perfectly acceptable for a girl to ask someone out, so I want both of you to take a turn doing the asking. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to answer any questions you might have."

Lyra was feeling nervous and unbalanced about this whole thing, but when she saw Bel smirk, she raised an eyebrow and set her jaw. No stupid demon was going to get the better of her at anything, least of all this.

She walked over and nodded at him. "Hullo, Bel."

"You look really nice today," Bel said.

Lyra wasn't sure if this was part of the 'date' thing or not, so she settled for smiling noncomittally. "Thank you. How is your day so far?"

"Okay," Bel said with a little shrug. "But lucking out and having to do this assignment with you is definitely in the plus column."

Okay, now she was sure he was buttering her up. She smiled inwardly.

"That may be the nicest thing anyone's said to me today."

"That's a definite shame," Bel said, turning on the charm. "So, you ready to do this assignment?" He smiled easily at her.

She blinked, but covered it quickly with a smile. "Of course."

She added, "Fair warning, though. My world doesn't go for this kind of thing, at least not until people are very much older than fourteen."

"Well, yeah, no reason to rush into things," Bel said smoothly. "But how about something like going out for ice cream after class? You allowed to do something like that?"

"Uh, yeah, I suppose." She shrugged. "It all just sounded so very formal in the handout."

"More fun to just take it easy and relax," Bel said. "Least that's what I've learned about humans. No need to follow any silly rules. So what do you say, you, me, ice cream?"

[ooc: heading home from work, back in 45 or so]

"Yeah, ice cream. Sounds good." Lyra's brow furrowed. "Uh, what's ice cream?"

Bel blinked. "You don't know what ice cream is?"

"Uh... no?" Lyra said sheepishly. "What is it?"

"It's like sweet frozen cream," Bel said. "With all kinds of cool flavors. Chocolate, mint, karamel sutra. . . ."

"Oh! I know what that is. We call it sorbetti at home." Lyra grinned.

"There you go," Bel said. "So we have a date for sorbetti. Now you wanna ask me out?"

Lyra blinked. This was easier than she'd thought.

"I dunno what you like to do." Lyra shrugged. "How about... the cinema?"

"Movies are cool," Bel said.
