Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Fifth Period

Lorelai smiled at the students once they'd all entered and taken their seats.

"Morning everyone! Today we're going to learn about dating. It's an important part of the modern high school experience for a lot of students and with Homecoming coming up in a few weeks, I want to give you all the information you'll need to have a wonderful time."

She launched into a short lecture on old-fashioned courtship rituals and how they evolved into modern dating. She also gave out a packet of handouts on Homecoming, Prom, Dating, and Safe Sex.

"Now, I'm going to pair you up and I want you to try asking each other out on dates. In this day and age, it's perfectly acceptable for a girl to ask someone out, so I want both of you to take a turn doing the asking. Marty, Jaye and I will be around to answer any questions you might have."

"Vegan?" Stark shook his head a little. He'd never heard of Vegans as a species, plus Mac wasn't an alien as far as he knew, so it probably meant something else. "I don't know what that is. What do you eat then?"

Mac smiled, not the first time someone had been confused by that one. "I don't eat things that come from animal sources," she said by way of explaination.

She thought for a moment. "I drink coffee, how about that? You want to get coffee?"

"Oh. You just eat plants then? And things from plants?"

Stark nodded at the coffee suggestion. "Coffee. Yes. Okay. We can get coffee. Maybe after classes?"

"Okay," Mac also nodded. Then went very quiet, not sure where to go from there. "This is weird, isn't it?"

"A little, yes." Stark shrugged. "Everything here is weird, I think."

Mac huffed an amused laugh, "That is very true. Never thought that I'd end up asking someone out as a class assignment though."
