Cross Species Communications - Monday 7th Period

"Good day class." Mary nodded as soon as all of the students were settled. "I trust you were able to review the information on Dolphin vocabulary and remembered to dress appropriately. Dolphins can hear a much wider scale of sounds then humans can, so when you finally get to talk to today's guest speaker, you may have some difficulty understanding right away. However, I am confident that you will all eventually be able to pick up the nuances of the language coming from a native speaker. So do yourself the courtesy of not giving up if at first you don't succeed."

As she gave the lecture, Mary walked through the class placing a small tube of sunscreen on the desk of each student.

"If you have not already, please apply this sunscreen to any exposed skin, as we will be going somewhere very warm and sunny when I am done with my introduction."

"Dolphins are considered by some to be among the most intelligent creatures on the planet Earth. Some varieties of Dolphins are known to use tools. Such as breaking off bits of sponge to protect sensitive parts of the mouth while catching fish. Tool use is not an innate knowledge, such as how a spider knows how to spin a web. Tool use is taught from Mother to Daughter at an early stage of development."

"They are also famous for their willingness to occasionally approach humans and playfully interact with them in the water. In return, some cultures such as the Ancient Greeks treated them with welcome; a ship spotting dolphins riding in their wake was considered a good omen for a smooth voyage. There are many stories of dolphins protecting shipwrecked sailors against sharks by swimming circles around the swimmers. Dolphins are social animals, living in pods (also called "schools") of up to a dozen animals. In places with a high abundance of food, podscan join temporarily, forming an aggregation called a superpod;such groupings may exceed 1000 dolphins."

When she was done, Mary took an old brass compass from her desk and held it carefully in the palm of her hand.

"Now class I want you all to get up and come gather around me. Come along now spit-spot! Get as close as you can without crowding eachother overly much please... Very good. Thank you." Mary said holding the compass up over her head. "Now. We're going to visit a friend of mine, her name is Amelia and I expect you to be polite. Are we all clear? Good. So then... West!"

If any squirrels, or shrubs, or school security cameras happened to be watching at the moment Mary Poppins said "West!"... They would have seen...

Nothing.

Mary and her students have disappeared.

[[ooc: Please please wait while I create OCD threads. Open, but I'm going to bed. At the end of the period, just before the bell rings, the whole class appears back in the classroom. The bits after the start of the "West" thread are NFB due to distance.]]

Willow cleared her throat and tried, //Hi. My name is Willow. It's nice to meet you.//

Lana very carefully gathered her thoughts about what she wanted to say then smiled. //Hello, Amelia. My name is Lana. It's good to meet you.//

//I would have to say that it's the connections you make with people.// Lana stumbled a bit trying to figure out how to say what she wanted in Dolphin.

//May I touch you?// Lana asked politely. //I've never been anywhere near a dolphin before.//

Lana had stripped down to her bathing suit for this, so it was an easy matter to wade in enough to carefully touch Amelia. //Oh, you feel amazing! So smooth!//

[ooc: woohoo!]

It looked so interesting, and yet Willow wasn't certain she was coordinated enough to pull it off. //Do you think I can?//

Ohhh she was nervous. But then again how often did she get a chance to do this?

//Okay, thank you!//

Willow wasn't quite sure how to balance but she did her best to not do anything that would ruin what Amelia was doing. She was able to hold steady for a little bit, then her balance collapsed from under her.

She was extra wet now, but laughing.

//That was fun! Thank you!//
