Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #6

"Hello, everyone," Jarod waved, "and I hope you've all decided on what part you want to play. Today it's about dressing the part. As convincing as a person's lie may be, if they haven't paid attention to the details, it will be easy to find them out, or to poke holes in their story."

"For instance, if someone says they are a soldier in the Army, but wear an Air Force dress uniform, you know something's wrong. With a military uniform, in particular, you want to pay attention to the ribbons, and what they mean. Or if someone is an FBI agent, but flashes the wrong badge, or worse, has no badge, then, again, you know there's a problem and to be on your guard."

"However," he said, pacing, "that's not the only issue. Here in Fandom, we have some unique temporal issues--can you tell from a person's clothing whether they're really from the century they say they are? Just because someone's walking around in a bodice, corset, and hoop skirts doesn't mean they're from the deep South during the Civil War, after all. However, if they are walking around dressed like that, and they're not from that era, the next question is why they're doing that--which helps you uncover their lie, or ultimate goal."

"So, today's assignment: When you sign in, tell me what part you would play. Then, I want you to find magazine pictures or websites or even the clothes, if you have them and can find them, and bring them back, and explain what specific details you've added to support your story, whatever that story happens to be."

Jarod grinned. "Go, have fun, be creative, but remember the details."

[ooc: No Jarod until 6 pm EDT, as usual. Also, I'm keeping this post open for a week so people can be as creative or detailed or OCD as they'd like going around town or finding links or photoshopping or whatever. Of course, as usual, you're more than welcome to handwave the assignment, as well.]

Nadia could totally actually pose as a maid. She just had to be like Walter, only female!

Also, she'd picked up some German while in training.

Nadia was once again presented with stuff she already knew. If she'd known she'd go away for "five days" to train to be a spy, she totally would have signed up for different classes.

That link, btw, is to the transcript for the episode in which Nadia goes briefly undercover as Gretchen, a hotel maid.

I'm . . . not feeling so terribly creative, right now, I suppose.

After watching movies like King of Conflict (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399295/) and that one episode of that clever spy guy who knows a lot about science (http://www.tv.com/macgyver/on-a-wing-and-a-prayer/episode/47268/summary.html), Pippi knew she would need several looks.

Buisness (http://static.flickr.com/68/159529563_a2679b42a8_o.jpg).

Casual (http://static.flickr.com/71/202937075_a0dee89df1_o.jpg).

And something for in the field... Lucky for her she knew how independent military types dressed for field work (http://static.flickr.com/71/202937810_81807d4f7d_o.jpg).

Jack signed in. As Flight Lieutenant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_Squadron) Jack Harkness, Eagle Squadron, Royal Air Force, during the German British conflict known as 'The Blitz'.

Re: During the Lecture

Jack sat in the back of the room, listening to Jarod with half an ear, most of his attention on the book that he was going to get from he'd taken out of the library before class.

Joxer signed in as Jacques S'Er, French Foreign Legionnaire.

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Joxer is totally sure he can pull off the legionnaire (http://mikes-images.com/eps/xs/images/xs_5_mq_092sd.jpg) look. And dumb French accents should be easy.

Getting Pip to not kill him over the dumb accent, that might be harder.

Jaye signs in, with difficulty, as Jane Joan Jane Mahandra Matilda Smith, revolutionist coed. And kind of thinks that sounds like a bad fanfic.

Re: Assignment

[personal profile] fates_jaye 2006-08-14 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking about it, Jaye thinks the 60's is probably a good time period to work with, because they actually did stuff back then. She could protest war or something. Sounds easy enough.

Rory signed in as Laura Bentmore, homemaker circa 1955.

Rory was sure she could do the whole 50's (http://opposites-are-polar.net/GGepisodes/Season1/1-14/150.jpg) housewife (http://opposites-are-polar.net/GGepisodes/Season1/1-14/157.jpg) thing. And seriously, who would suspect a thing from an ingenue like that?

Rory? Took notes.

Modern clothes were too easy. And Parker's trying to prove something here. Who says she can't (http://pics.livejournal.com/mparker17/pic/00012zdc/g21) do (http://pics.livejournal.com/mparker17/pic/00011f5t/g21) prim (http://pics.livejournal.com/mparker17/pic/000133zk/g24)?

Ha.

She's changing her name to Rita Avnet, though, and working up the backstory....

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was Sam who'd given Jack the idea. Sort of. She used to be in the Air Force, and she always had an air of competence, no matter what she was doing. People trusted the military, right? And pilots were sexy and exciting - or at least Jack had always thought so - but Sam might not appreciate him impersonating someone from her Air Force.

So he'd handwavily as it turned out gone to the library to find a book on British Military Uniforms to take to class with him. And he'd ended up completely engrossed in a book on the Eagle Squadrons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._133_Squadron_RAF), American volunteers (:http://www.fourthfightergroup.com/eagles/133.html") who'd joined another country's fight, and flown planes called spitfires and had just generally been dashing heroes.

Jack hadn't been able to resist. Which was why he'd also handwavily, because it turns out sleep is good hunted down a bunch of bits and pieces to complete the uniform of a Flight Lieutenant (http://www.answers.com/topic/flight-lieutenant). He hadn't been able to find a great coat, but considering it was the middle of summer, he wasn't too upset about that.

Jack figured it was a good choice. As long as there weren't any actual members of the squadrons around, any anomalies in his behaviour could be explained away as simply because he was from another country. The time period in question had very primitive communications, so papers could be easily forged and there'd be no easy way to check up on him. And he had to learn about adapting to different time periods eventually, given his intended vocation.

All in all, he was pretty happy with how it had turned out (http://pics.livejournal.com/time_agent/pic/0000p3ya).

Sawyer could definitly pass off the NY Sheriff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherriff#New_York) role, being cocky and a jerk is definitly not out of his vocabulary. He actually does own an authentic (http://pictures.greatestjournal.com/userimg/6397250/1445847) sheriffs badge (http://www.collectors-badges.com/special_offer.htm), and one Bronx Sheriffs outfit, and does a hell of a New York accent.

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth could manage a red cross patch at least. The rest of the uniform was comprised mostly of pictures she'd *handwavily* grabbed from the internet (http://torrihigginson.info/photos/index.php?spgmGal=Movies/1996_The_English_Patient#?) or from books in the library.

Whilst her medical knowledge wasn't quite up to a nurse's level, she had taken a number of first aid courses and knew that for nurses near the front lines, most of it would be common sense and following orders to stabilize the patients.

Or she could always explain her position in the unit as a translator. Because that she'd have no problem with at all.

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Pippi Clara also knows she should probably have her facts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arms_industry) strait (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammunition) and her ducks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artillery) in (http://pmdtc.org/usml.htm) a row (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missile)...

She's talked to Tex (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomtownies/1017807.html?thread=43262159#t43262159) about what it is like to be an arms dealer, and to Pip (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/975785.html?thread=52008105#t52008105) about what it's like to deal with one.

Peter signed in as Jeff Graham, modern day understudy to the San Diego Chicken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Chicken).

Sadly, he didn't have a chicken costume on him. But he had pictures (http://images.google.com/images?q=san%20diego%20chicken&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=N&tab=wi)!

Peter took notes and considered very carefully who he would like to pretend to be. And then he remembered that his girlfriend was away this week and he'd have to make his own fun, so he decided on something completely insane instead.

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's easier to portray a *real* person, Parker has dug up the records and birth certificate of one Rita Avnet (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~mcgrew/Brisco-County-Jr/brisco-county.episode-guide.html#Episode_11), a legal secretary in San Francisco, who has accreditations from a secretarial school in Boston and recommendations from a law firm there.

Getting a job with a local law firm will also be helped by looking up legal terms (http://dictionary.law.com/), short hand (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/shorthand.htm), and probably how to act like a lady (http://members.aol.com/EastLynne/Etiquette.htm) in the 19th Century.

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] peter--parker.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Peter had quickly Photoshopped a picture of his face onto a picture (http://pics.livejournal.com/peter__parker/pic/0000zbks) of the San Diego Chicken. It wouldn't fool an expert, but it was probably good enough to trick somebody who wasn't looking too hard. If he had a bit more time he could do a better job.
