Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #5

Jarod was sunburned, but relaxed, as he stood in front of the class. "Hello. So, you're trying to find someone, and their trail has gone cold. Or, you're running a con, and you need to make sure you don't get caught. So, what else do you need? You need friends. Or, if not friends, confederates who won't be bought--because you have common interests, or loyalty, or they owe you a favor, or whatever."

"So, today's project is to make a list of people you would look for, if you wanted to find a missing person, or a list of people you might want to make friends with if you wanted to protect yourself. Then, I want you to explain how you would go about doing that."

He yawned. "Excuse me. Anyway, that's a short class assignment, but be prepared for next week--I'm going to want you to have an idea in mind of what kind of character you'd want to be, and next week, you'll be learning how to dress the part."

Parker started the two lists, for missing persons, and self-protection.

1. Angelo.

Wait, no. Too hard to explain.

1. Private Detective (Angel)

Actually he was number one on both lists. But maybe 'giving souled vampire copy of prophecy, tormenting into dating blonde warlord' wasn't the kind of thing you could use more than once to make friends with someone.

How to Make Friends:

1. Bribery

Peter started to work on his assignment. It wasn't a very good list, but it was a list. And he was working on it.

Jack leaned one elbow on the desk and his head on his hand, and started work on the assignment.

The list of who he'd make friends with, and how he'd make it happen, didn't take long. Some of them he'd actually used.

The list of who he'd look for was a lot harder - except for the person at the top of the list. That one was just obvious. But he finally managed something he was happy with, handed it in, then folded his arms on the desk, rested his chin on top of them, and relaxed, waiting for class to finish.

Joxer was actually absent. Cause he wasn't leaving his room on fear of extreme embarassment and possibly death.

Who I'd Look For

1. The person who's missing.
2. Their friends, or people who supply things the missing person wants or needs.
3. Anyone else with an interest in finding the person.
4. Anyone who's already tried to find them - saves duplicating work.
5. Anyone with an interest in making sure the person isn't found - they might be responsible for them going missing in the first place.

People I'd make Friends With and How

Who:
-They'd have to be capable of protecting me, first off, or have some sort of useful ability or talent.
-After that, I'd look for a protective streak, and/or ones who are isolated, or different, from other people.
-failing that, those with a common goal/common enemy.

How: Make myself important enough to them that they want to protect me, or help me; give them a personal, emotional stake in having me around, make them believe that they need me.
-Flirting, seduction, and sex.
-If that doesn't work, or if it's not enough, make them believe I trust them. It knocks down people's defences.
-Pretend to be kind, supportive, understanding - everyone has a weakness, a vulnerability - if I can make them believe it makes them special, it's a good way to get past their defences.

Tyler stared at his paper for a long time.

He knew what he would do. He'd look for a guy with a broken nose and empty eyes, and trade on who that person thought he was until he got whatever he wanted.

He assumed that wasn't an option in Jarod's world, so he twirled the pen between his fingers as he waited for words to come.

Jaye writes her sentence, and then kind of sits there folding a piece of paper over and over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And now she can't fold anymore. New piece of paper, then.

Who I'd look for:
1. People who had strong ties (good or bad) to the missing person
2. Friendly or bribeable authorities.
3. Reporters or charity workers who might take a professional interest in the case.
4. People who think they owe me something.

Friends:
1. Strong guys.
2. Anyone with experience hiding people or things.
3. People who could be influenced to do what I wanted.

How:
1. Offer something they need.
2. Listen.
3. Make them feel important.

Tyler quit writing there. He didn't like this exercise, or maybe he liked it too much.

D's list of people to contact for the missing included the person's current friends, family, employer, employees, teachers and schoolmates, and people from the person's past.

Her list of people to 'friend' included the rich, the powerful, the practical and the knowledgeable. In short, she included nearly everyone she could think of because you never knew who would be able to help in the end - whichever end that may be.

Missing Persons:
Who I'd look for to help me find them--
1. Private Detective - (Angel) can legally ask questions so I'm not implicated.
2. Computer expert to search databases for mention of person (Broots)
3. Local authorities (police/hospital workers/morgue attendants)
4. Places of employment, known hang-outs, find friends/family

How to find these people:
1. Bribery, payment, emotional blackmail is also effective. Then again, you can just find one like Angel who wants to help *everyone*.
2. Bribery, payment, emotional bludgeoning of staff. Rewards after. (new zip drives, etc.)
3. Explain worry/concern of family, money willing to spend, time a factor, support later from various business resources.
4. Legwork (Angel), suitcase of cash (discreetly, so as not to attract cons), and yes, phone work. Bah.

People to find to protect myself:
1. Someone uniquely creative and brilliant, Teach. Know where I can find one?
2. Someone strong, semi-invulnerable, good fighter (Angel) (Also, can be nagged into doing what I want)
3. Someone with unique talents for computer resources (Broots or someone else) to create a new identity, get me plane tickets, passport, cash to get out of country
4. Someone whose main trait is ruthlessness

How to make them help me protect myself:
1. Now taking suggestions.
2. For any other superpowerful semi-invulnerable person besides Angel, payment, lots of it. For Angel, just imply I'm in danger.
3. Payment, payment, browbeating, and gratitude. Geeks are not appreciated enough in our society. They like being thanked.
4. Promise of future help in return. Someone as ruthless as I'm imagining will need it.

Z knew what she would do. She would go ask an alien that lived in a dumpster and ate garbage. It seemed like Piggy knew something about everything. But she had a feeling that was not the answer Jarod was looking for, so she tried to come up with a better list.
