Looking even less happy than last class, Callisto pointed to the box. "Put your shoes in there and take a handout."

"Knowing how to make fire is one of the most important wilderness survival skills possible. Without it, you can't keep warm, cook, or use it to keep predators away from your camp."

"For today's exercise you will be split into two groups, one group will start a fire using a bow drill, and the other with flint and steel. You don't get to go home until you have a fire."

Callisto waited until the students had split into their groups, before speaking again.

"Another useful survival skill is the ability to create tools from scratch, even more important is the ability to figure out how to make the best use of the tools available." Callisto held up a pointed stick. "If you want your shoes back, I want a different use for a pointy stick from each of you at the end of class.

"One more thing, you're unlikely to find dry fuel for your fire," she said, picking up a bucket of water and tossing it over the firewood. "So consider this a touch of realism."

"Anybody got any pocket lint?" Sam asked, searching her own and finding some thread. "Or some dry leaves? Maybe some tree bark?"

"You can use it to stake vampires who don't know how to use a phone?" Sam said, phrasing things carefully.

"Dried grass would work too," Dean suggested. "With the heat we've been having, good chance we could find some of that."

"Good point," Sam said, nodding.

Tyler reached into his pockets. "I have gross tissues," he shrugged. "Grass is better."

He bent over for a fistful and tossed it atop the kindling.

"True enough," Callisto said, throwing Tyler's shoes at him.

"Works." Callisto tossed Dean's shoes back at him.

Callisto shrugged and threw Anders his shoes back.

"It can," Callisto said, and tossed Gwynn's shoes back.

Sam's boots sailed through the air towards her. "Don't tempt me."

Sam caught her boots and sat down to put them on. Probably better she didn't know how to work interdimensional travel without a Quantum Mirror just yet. "I wouldn't dream of it."

"Please," Walter urged. "Give it a try."

"You can knot your hair and put the stick through it so that it stays up and off your neck and face," Rory suggested.

Rory carefully followed the directions, and within seconds, had created char dust on a leaf.

She blew on it, and it ignited into an ember. "Ohmygod, I did it."

The shoes bounced off of Tyler's chest, but he caught them on the rebound before reshoeing and wanding off.
