How to Be an Entertainer Workshop #4, Outside Caritas, 06.14.06, Afternoon

GOB was waiting for his students outside Caritas this afternoon. Whether this was planned or a result of the ongoing zombie strike, he wasn't saying.

"You know those jerks you see around when you're walking in cities? The ones playing saxophone, or beating a bunch of buckets like they're drums, or singing way off-key thinking they're so special, or miming? They're street performers, a special kind of cheap performance whore that thinks they're so good that they can give it up in public in the hopes that a lot of people will donate a couple bucks."

"This week, you're going to be those jerks. Find something you're good at. Or something you think you're good at, but you're actually delusional. Then get out in public and force that performance on people. Get to the park and sing, or play guitar, or do stand up comedy, or play saxophone, whatever, I don't really care."

GOB indicated several cases off to the side. "Since the Zombie Band is on strike, I had Tino borrow their instruments. Including a saxophone, not like that jackass is getting one. Feel free to use any of them for this. But no miming. You mime and Tino punches you. Got it?"

"Figure out what you'll be doing and practice right out here today, hit the public at some point in the next week, report back next Wednesday. Oh, and do the same at the Art Fair on Friday. Bug people there if you can make it."

"And since today's my birthday, I'm claiming fifteen percent of any tips you get from your performing. Okay, get going. Figure out your schtick."

Give your name and remove a zombie protest sign from the lawn.

Talk amongst yourselves. Figure out what you're going to be doing on the streets of Fandom.

Practice whatever you decided.

GOB's just standing a bit away from the entrance. Freaking zombies.

Seriously, at some point in the next week, just go to a public place - either your post or an open one - and perform. Park, dorms, a business if they're okay with it (check first)... have fun.

You'll also have the opportunity to perform in the same kind of way at the Art Fair.

Next week, there will be a wacky way to tell the workshop what it was like.

John signs in.

Peter signs in.

Jamie signs in.

Peter knew what he was good at. Singing TV show theme songs for the masses. TV theme songs were short, sweet and to the point. They also brought back memories of playing ball in the house and accidentally inviting two boys to Homecoming.

Jamie makes a quick run to the kwik stop where he picks up some old hallowen makeup.

When he returns he is dressed as a mime.

He starts doing the invisible box in a sullen way.

Before his performance, Jamie walks up to GOB with a container (http://www.xalex.com/images/pic1/1/71/specimen-collection-cup-for-urine-drug-testing.jpg) containing... something.

"Here you go sir. I just wanted to prove to you that I'm 100% clean of drugs."

Joxer signs in.

After thinking on this assignment for a long while, John's decided what he's going to do.

He's keeping it a secret though. He does spend a lot of time standing against one wall, trying to be perfectly, perfectly still.

Jamie wanders over in his mime outfit and places one hand on John so he can lean against him.

John tries not to move but it's very hard to contain a laugh when there's a mime leaning against you.

Just so you know, nobody is actually going to punch Jamie. Can GOB give him detention, though?

"Tino, punch him," GOB said. Tino refused. He wasn't big on committing violence against students.

"What the hell is this?" GOB asked.

Unfortunately I have limited availability until late Saturday. As long as that is okay with the detention instructor this weekend I'm cool with it.

"Urine Sample."

Jamie continues to lean because that's what mimes do.

Jamie then began a routine that resembled a certain someone riding around on segway scooter.

The detention instructor is Elliot. I can check with her.

GOB can always just threaten detention and not do anything about it, though.

"What the hell are you doing? And, Tino, punch him already!"

"I didn't think you'd be able to shake it, but you're not Sock Love anymore, Pee Cup," GOB said, shaking his head. "Take it to the clinic and have some tests run. I'm not touching that thing."

John starts laughing.

"Dude, am I a prop?"

Jamie silently reacts in shock because that's what mimes do.

I just sent her and e-mail as well.

And how much can I love you for bringing in an opportunity to be a mime?

"What if I...moved?" John says and takes a step away from mime!Jamie.

It's fine as long as the detention time doesn't clash with the basketball game, or if you're okay with Jamie being in two places at once. She'll probably let people go around 5-ish.

Basketball! That's right. No detention for Jamie.

Thank you. My teams are already looking a little scanty.

Jamie pulls out a boombox that just happens to have "The Final Countdown" in it and begins to imitate GOB's opening routine.

Jamie attempts to imitate John's movement like a good mime would do. He succeeds partially in that his movement looks like Cameron Mitchell.

Jamie shrugs and goes off to do his routine.

"Riiiight," John says, quirking an eyebrow at Jamie. "You've got quite the talent there, Jamie."

Kawalsky signed in.

Kawalsky juggled.

It was pretty much the only busking thing he was good at. He started with juggling balls.

If he practiced enough, he might upgrade to kittens by the end of the week.

Joxer did the one thing he could think of, not having his lute handy.

He did muscle flexing poses. Which really isn't that impressive even if you have gigantic steroid pumped muscles.

...which he doesn't.

River signed in

River carwheeled across the lawn while singing Osirian pop songs in Chinese.

Jamie mouthed the word "Riiight," while quirking an eyebrow at John and then mouthed. "You've got quite the talent there Jamie."

Greg signed in/

Greg also went to the Kwik Stop.

He came back with a bunch of balloons (yes, actual balloons, not condoms, thanks) and began making balloon animals.

He offered one to GOB. "Since it's your birthday, I made you a dog!"

It probably more closely resembled a giraffe/weasel hybrid.

"Thank you, Dorkface," GOB said. "I appreciate the... dog thing."
