Norse Mythology, Thursday, Second Period

"Okay," Don said with great reluctance, "let's talk about Loki." Did they have to?

"Loki, son of the jötunn Fárbauti and the goddess Laufey, apparently," because that was not how that went where Don was from, "is a trickster god. Specifically, where I'm from, he is the god of mischief, which means that he gets into it. All the time. In most of the myths involving Loki, he either has caused a problem the other gods have to find their way out of, or he cons their way out of a problem they've found themselves in. Sometimes both. He, along with two of his offspring, are key players in the myth of Ragnarok--Loki, it is said, will trick another god into slaying Baldr, which starts Ragnarok, while the wolf Fenrir will swallow the sun and the world serpent Jormungandr will release its tail and rise from the sea.

"And now you're probably thinking, 'His offspring are what?' And yes, two of Loki's sons, with his wife Angrboda, are a wolf and a sea serpent. His daughter is the goddess Hel. He is also the mother of Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse. Loki is a shapeshifter, and his children reflect that.

"Now let's talk about Sleipnir, because that bit is more or less the same as I remember it from my universe," and talking about Ragnarok in the future tense gave him the heebie jeebies. "According to the legend, when the gods were building Asgard they hired a builder to build a wall around Asgard, with only the help of his horse, a stallion. When the gods realized the builder was going to meet his deadline and they were going to have to pay him, they panicked, because the gods can be terrible people, and asked Loki to find a way to delay the completion of the wall. Loki transformed into a mare and, ah, distracted the builder's horse, and eleven months later gave birth to baby Sleipnir. And there you have it: how Odin got his horse, a very normal story." And now you knew, and you couldn't unknow it. "Next week, we'll learn about one of the many," many, many, many, "examples of Loki fucking around with Thor. Does anyone have any questions?"
